The 2026 International GT Open season burst into life at the Autódromo do Algarve in Portimão with a weekend that delivered pace, drama, and early championship signals. From the very first free practice session, the competitive order remained tightly contested across all classes. Teams quickly adapted to warm, almost summer-like conditions, while drivers pushed to extract maximum performance from the new Michelin tyres introduced for customer racing.

CBRX by SPS set the early benchmark, yet the momentum shifted continuously as qualifying and races unfolded. Notably, debutant team ZRS Motorsport made an immediate impact, while Greystone GT emerged as a formidable force by the end of the weekend. Across both races, the field showcased depth and consistency, with multiple manufacturers and teams fighting at the front.

As a result, the Algarve opener not only delivered compelling racing but also provided the first clear indications of the title contenders for 2026.

2026 International GT Open: Portimão: Free Practice Sessions

The opening day of the season immediately highlighted the level of competition across the grid. Dexter Müller and Yannick Mettler led the way in free practice for CBRX by SPS, setting a benchmark time of 1:41.732 during the cooler morning session. Their performance placed them narrowly ahead of Dinamic Motorsport and Elite Motorsport, with margins measured in mere tenths of a second.

This tight spread continued throughout the top positions, with ZRS Motorsport also showing strong pace ahead of its debut weekend. Meanwhile, AF Corse, ISR Racing, and Team Motopark all remained within striking distance, underlining how evenly matched the field had become.

The Am category also delivered competitive lap times, with Olimp Racing leading the way, while the Bronze test saw Libor Milota demonstrate strong pace. In addition, Thursday’s private testing hinted at Motopark’s potential, as both of its entries topped sessions.

However, several teams encountered setbacks before the weekend even began. Villorba Corse withdrew due to technical issues, AF Motorsport missed early running, and Into Africa Racing switched cars after sustaining damage. Despite these challenges, the grid remained highly competitive heading into qualifying.

Greystone leads GT Open standings after Portimão opener as ZRS wins on debut and rivals battle in dramatic 2026 start.

2026 International GT Open: Portimão: Saturday

Qualifying for Race 1 immediately delivered a standout performance from Alex Fontana, who secured pole position for ZRS Motorsport in its GT Open debut. He demonstrated confidence and familiarity with the Algarve circuit, setting the tone for what would become a defining day for the team.

“I was in pole here last, with the 911 of a different team, so it seems I have quite a good feeling with this track. The car was perfect and I’m very happy that ZRS starts its journey in the GT Open with such as good result. I think we can carry on this good pace into the race, although there are many competitive rivals.”

The race itself proved equally dramatic. Initially, AF Corse seized the lead, yet misfortune struck when Tommaso Mosca suffered a puncture and later became involved in an incident that triggered a safety car. Consequently, the race dynamics shifted significantly.

After the restart, Fontana regained control and built a decisive advantage. Following the pit stops, Pietro Armanni maintained the lead and guided the ZRS Porsche to a commanding debut victory.

“It’s great to start my GT3 career with a win and to have ZRS winning from scratch”, said Armanni, while Fontana added: “We did a great job through the sessions and everything went well, except losing the lead at the start to the AF Ferrari, which later had some issue.”

Behind them, Motopark secured second after an intense duel with Greystone GT, while Pro-Am and Am classes delivered equally competitive battles.

2026 International GT Open: Portimão: Sunday

Heading into Sunday, Greystone GT seized momentum as Dean Macdonald secured pole position for Race 2 with an impressive lap of 1:40.469. The session remained closely contested, with CBRX by SPS and Motopark once again featuring prominently near the front.

Macdonald reflected on the previous day’s battle while looking ahead to the race: “Everybody is thrilled by the show we put on yesterday, but frankly I hope we’ll have a more boring race today! The car felt great, conditions perfect, and this is a tricky track, but always fun.”

Meanwhile, the second row featured strong contenders, including Motopark and ZRS Motorsport, ensuring another unpredictable race. In the Am category, Krystian Korzeniowski continued his consistent form by setting the fastest time.

Overall, the qualifying session reinforced the depth of competition, with multiple teams capable of fighting for victory.

Race 2 delivered a decisive performance from Greystone GT, as Zac Meakin and Dean Macdonald converted their pace into a dominant victory. Although Yannick Mettler initially took the lead, strategy and consistency ultimately allowed Greystone to control the race after the pit stops.

After driver changes, Meakin built a clear advantage, while Motopark once again secured second place. Elite Motorsport completed the podium, further demonstrating the competitive balance across the PRO class.

“Again, like yesterday, it wasn’t an easy race but everything went smoothly”, they said on the podium.

In Pro-Am, Henrique Chaves delighted home fans with a late victory, capitalising on incidents and misfortune affecting rivals. Meanwhile, AF Corse claimed the Am class win, rounding off a strong return to the series.

As the race progressed, multiple incidents—including contact between leading cars and a spin for Müller—shaped the final order. Nevertheless, Greystone maintained control at the front and secured a clear win.

2026 International GT Open Standings after Round 1 in Portimão

The opening round of the 2026 International GT Open season at Portimão has already established a clear competitive structure across all classes, with consistency proving just as important as outright pace. Zac Meakin and Dean Macdonald leave Portugal at the top of the overall drivers’ standings after combining a podium in Race 1 with victory in Race 2. Their ability to convert strong qualifying pace into race results gives them an early advantage in the championship fight.

Close behind, Christian Mansell and Maximilian Götz have positioned themselves as the most consistent challengers. Two second-place finishes underline their reliability and racecraft, ensuring they remain firmly within striking distance. Meanwhile, Alex Fontana and Pietro Armanni made an immediate impact by winning Race 1 on debut for ZRS Motorsport, although a less competitive result in Race 2 leaves them slightly behind the leading pair.

Further down the order, Tom Emson and Tom Lebbon hold a solid position thanks to consistent top finishes, while several other crews—including Yaroslav Veselaho and Thomas Neubauer, as well as Marcelo Ramírez and Dominik Baumann—have begun to build their points tally. Notably, the midfield remains extremely tight, with only small margins separating multiple driver pairings.

In the PRO-AM category, Henrique Chaves and Charles Bateman lead the way after securing a class victory, but they face strong competition from Jim Pla and Michaël Blanchemain, as well as Dexter Müller and Yannick Mettler. The AM class also reflects close competition, with Adrian and Andrzej Lewandowski holding the early advantage ahead of Marcelo Hahn and Galid Osman.

In the teams’ standings, Team Motopark leads thanks to consistent results across both races, while Greystone GT and ZRS Motorsport remain close contenders. Overall, the Portimão opener suggests a highly competitive and unpredictable season ahead.
