BMW Team WRT has revealed an updated Shell Helix livery for its No. 20 BMW M Hybrid V8 ahead of this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. The refreshed design gives the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar points-leading entry a more striking red and yellow identity. As a result, the car now carries a stronger visual connection to Shell-sponsored BMW GT3 machinery.
The team revealed the livery on Thursday, just before this weekend’s Le Mans test day. René Rast and Robin Frijns will once again share the No. 20 BMW with Sheldon van der Linde for the French endurance classic.
Shell Helix takes a more prominent role
BMW Team WRT has placed Shell Helix at the centre of the No. 20 car’s updated look. The revised livery moves away from a more restrained sponsor presence and instead gives the BMW M Hybrid V8 a bolder appearance for one of the biggest races of the season.
The red and yellow colour scheme immediately stands out across the car. Moreover, it mirrors the visual style already seen on Shell-backed BMW GT3 entries, creating a clearer link between BMW’s Hypercar and GT racing programmes.
Although the No. 20 car will feature the special design at Le Mans, the sister No. 15 BMW M Hybrid V8 will retain BMW’s traditional colours. Dries Vanthoor, Raffaele Marciello and Kevin Magnussen will drive that entry next weekend.
Spa victory adds momentum before Le Mans for BMW Team WRT
The livery reveal also arrives at an important moment for the No. 20 crew. Rast, Frijns and van der Linde head to Le Mans after claiming their first Hypercar victory at last month’s 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.
That result marked a breakthrough for BMW Team WRT in the WEC’s top class. In addition, it strengthened the No. 20 car’s position at the head of the Hypercar points standings before the championship moves to its most demanding round.
Le Mans will now give the trio another opportunity to build on that momentum. However, the 24-hour race will test the BMW M Hybrid V8 across changing temperatures, heavy traffic and relentless strategic pressure.
Team WRT expands its special Le Mans look
The No. 20 BMW M Hybrid V8 does not stand alone in Team WRT’s Le Mans design push. The Belgian squad has also prepared new liveries for both of its LMGT3 entries.
Its No. 32 and No. 69 BMW M4 GT3 EVOs will each race with fresh designs in the LMGT3 class. Therefore, the team will bring a noticeably updated visual identity across both Hypercar and GT categories at Le Mans.
The Shell Helix design marks the third special Le Mans livery for Team WRT this year. Together, the Hypercar and LMGT3 updates underline the team’s effort to make a strong impression at the French endurance classic, both on track and in the paddock.
