Gerrard Xie claimed his maiden FIA Formula 3 victory in a chaotic 2026 F3 Sprint Race in Monaco, inheriting the win after on-the-road winner Hiyu Yamakoshi was disqualified following post-race scrutineering.
Yamakoshi had controlled the Sprint Race from reverse-grid pole and crossed the line first for Van Amersfoort Racing. However, the Japanese driver was later excluded from the final classification after his car was found to be in breach of the FIA Formula 3 Technical Regulations.
As a result, Xie was promoted to victory for DAMS Lucas Oil, while Bruno del Pino moved up to second and Pedro Clerot inherited the final podium position. Alessandro Giusti finished fourth, with Noah Strømsted completing the top five.
The result had a significant impact on the championship standings, although Ugo Ugochukwu remains at the top of the Drivers’ Championship after finishing sixth in the revised classification. The ART Grand Prix driver now sits on 31 points, four clear of del Pino, who strengthened his title bid with another podium finish.
Monaco penalties reshape the Sprint Race result
Formula 3 returned to action in Monaco following an almost three-month break after the season-opening round in Melbourne. Théophile Naël carried strong pace throughout Friday, topping Free Practice before taking pole position for Sunday’s Feature Race.
However, with the top 12 reversed for the Sprint Race, Yamakoshi started from pole alongside Gerrard Xie. The VAR driver made a strong start and led through the early chaos, which included a Lap 1 hairpin collision, a red flag, multiple Safety Car interruptions, and several post-race penalties.
Yamakoshi initially appeared to have secured his maiden F3 victory, but his disqualification changed the final result dramatically. Xie’s inherited victory gave DAMS Lucas Oil its first points of the season, while del Pino and Clerot also benefited from the revised classification.
Ugochukwu remains ahead in the Drivers’ Championship
Despite missing out on the podium, Ugochukwu continues to lead the Drivers’ Championship after adding six points in Monaco. The American now sits on 31 points, having taken 25 from his Feature Race win in Melbourne and six from the Monaco Sprint.
Del Pino remains his closest challenger on 27 points after another strong Sprint Race result. The Spaniard has now scored in every race so far this season and sits just four points behind Ugochukwu.
Freddie Slater remains third on 18 points, despite a difficult Monaco Sprint Race in which he finished outside the points following a penalty for causing a collision. Taito Kato sits fourth on 16 points, while Maciej Gładysz completes the top five with 13.
Further back, Clerot’s promoted podium moves him level with Enzo Deligny on 12 points, while Xie’s inherited victory launches him into eighth in the standings with 10 points.
Van Amersfoort Racing keeps Teams’ Championship lead
Van Amersfoort Racing remains at the top of the Teams’ Championship despite Yamakoshi’s disqualification, largely thanks to del Pino’s second-place finish. The Dutch outfit now has 39 points.
Campos Racing sits second on 33 points, six behind VAR, while ART Grand Prix is third on 31 points. TRIDENT remains fourth with 26 points, followed by Rodin Motorsport on 15.
DAMS Lucas Oil made the biggest jump of the Sprint Race, with Xie’s inherited win giving the team 10 points and moving them to sixth in the standings.
