Mercedes F1’s George Russell returned to the top step of the podium as the Briton stormed to victory at the 2026 F1 Austrian GP, full results below.
Having secured back-to-back pole positions, George Russell started on the front row of the grid alongside Charles Leclerc. At lights-out, Russell comfortably found himself in the lead, as Lewis Hamilton made his way past Leclerc. Running wide at Turn 1, Kimi Antonelli was in search of a move on Leclerc. With a storming opening lap, Max Verstappen made his way up to P2. Both Cadillacs did not make it far into the race as Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez marked the first retirements of the race.
At Turn 3, Verstappen lunged down the inside of Hamilton to claim P2. However, on Lap 13 and 19, Hamilton and Verstappen pitted for a set of hard tyres, respectively. The seven-time and four-time World Champions continued to battle and trade places. On Lap 25, Antonelli headed into the pit lane for his mandatory pit stop. With Carlos Sainz stopped on the main straight, the incident led to the deployment of a virtual safety car, as the Spaniard marked the third retirement of the race.
Verstappen continued to chip away at Russell’s lead, gradually closing the gap to the Briton. With most drivers having completed their third stops, it became a race to the chequered flag. Another virtual safety car was deployed after Alex Albon struck a bollard at Turn 3. Heading into the closing stages of the race, the top three were Russell, Verstappen and Antonelli.
However, out in front, a well-managed and executed race saw Russell return to the top of the podium, claiming his second win of the 2026 season.
