Kimi Antonelli headed into the race knowing he would retain his lead in the standings. He was 41 points clear of Lewis Hamilton, with polesitter George Russell a further nine back.
Charles Leclerc started on the front row as he looked to get a strong result and get his name back in a potential championship fight this year. Lando Norris, two points behind him going into it, was only 6th on the grid. Max Verstappen (P5) and Oscar Piastri (P7) were split by the World Champion in qualifying on Saturday. Isack Hadjar rounded out the big 8.
In the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes looked to reassert their dominance after Lewis Hamilton won the Barcelona-Catalunya GP. McLaren were hoping to further extend the gap between themselves and Red Bull Racing.
Having locked out the fifth row of the grid, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad were hoping to fend off Pierre Gasly and help Racing Bulls cut the gap to Alpine. It was 16 points heading into the Grand Prix.
Audi, Haas and Williams were looking for some attrition to gain some points on Sunday.
At the back, Cadillac and Aston Martin needed to bank some valuable mileage following all their car gremlins so far this year.
