Noah Strømsted made an impressive start to Round 4 of the 2026 F3 season by setting the fastest time in Free Practice at Spielberg. The TRIDENT driver produced a 1:22.410 around the Red Bull Ring to lead the field ahead of Qualifying. More importantly, the performance gave Strømsted and his team an encouraging response following their difficult weekend in Barcelona.

However, changing track conditions and rising temperatures will present a fresh challenge during Qualifying. Strømsted expects tyre management and slipstreaming to play decisive roles as he targets his first pole position of the season.

TRIDENT responds to difficult Barcelona weekend

Strømsted immediately found a competitive rhythm during the morning session and placed TRIDENT at the top of the timesheets. His pace marked a significant improvement from the previous round in Barcelona, where the team struggled to extract enough performance during Qualifying.

TRIDENT worked to understand those issues before arriving in Austria. Strømsted believes that effort helped the team begin the Spielberg weekend from a much stronger position.

“I think it’s a big step compared to Barcelona last weekend. We worked quite hard to figure out the issues we had there, and it’s very nice to start out strong here in Austria,” he explained to Formula 3.

The Dane also benefited from previous experience at the circuit. Strømsted and TRIDENT tested at the Red Bull Ring one month before the race weekend, which allowed him to settle into the track quickly.

Nevertheless, warmer conditions changed the behaviour of the car and forced the team to adapt its approach.

“We drove here one month ago, so it didn’t take too long to get into the rhythm around this track, but the temperatures are very different, so the car behaves a bit differently. But I think we did a good job before we started.”

Track evolution promises a different challenge

Although Strømsted led Free Practice, he expects the circuit to change considerably before Qualifying. F2 and F1 will complete their own sessions between the two F3 outings. Consequently, those cars will lay down more rubber and increase the grip available around the Red Bull Ring.

Meanwhile, the rising afternoon temperature will add another variable. The European heatwave will increase track temperatures and place greater stress on the tyres, particularly through the final sector.

Strømsted therefore knows that his morning pace will not guarantee the same result later in the day.

“The temperature and the grip will rise a lot with F1 driving as well before Qualifying, so it will be quite different today. The overheating that will happen in the last section, especially with the two high-speed corners, will be a big challenge.”

The final two corners demand commitment while placing substantial energy through the tyres. Therefore, drivers must manage their preparation laps carefully before beginning a qualifying attempt.

Any driver who pushes too hard early in the lap could lose grip during the crucial closing section.

Slipstreaming could create a ‘messy’ Qualifying session

The Red Bull Ring’s layout will also make slipstreaming an important part of the fight for pole position.

Long straights dominate the opening two sectors, while the circuit’s short lap creates small gaps across the field. As a result, drivers will search for a tow without compromising their own track position.

Strømsted compared the situation to Monza, where drivers regularly slow down as they attempt to position themselves behind another car.

“I also think it’s quite clear at this track from the last couple of years that slipstream is quite mandatory around here, a bit like in Monza, so I think it will be a bit of a messy session. But I’m feeling confident going into it.”

Traffic could therefore prove just as important as outright speed. Drivers must find enough space to complete a clean lap while also gaining the benefit of a tow along the straights.

Furthermore, the close competition in F3 means even a small mistake or poorly timed run could dramatically affect the final order.

Strømsted targets TRIDENT’s first pole of the 2026 F3 season after promising Free Practice

Strømsted will now aim to convert his Free Practice pace into TRIDENT’s first pole position of the 2026 campaign. Campos Racing driver Théophile Nael has taken pole at each of the opening rounds, giving the team control of Friday Qualifying so far this season. Strømsted now hopes to end that run and place TRIDENT at the front of the grid.

A strong result would also provide an important boost after the team’s challenging start to the year.

“This is a very important weekend for us to get back and to score some points and show where we should be, because the start of the season has been quite bad.

“In the races it’s been good having experience, especially with tyre management, but we’ve just been struggling a bit with the pace in Qualifying, so quite different this year.”

TRIDENT has shown stronger race pace than qualifying speed during the opening events. However, starting further down the order has made it difficult for Strømsted to convert that performance into substantial points.

Therefore, a front-row start at Spielberg could change the shape of his weekend and give him a clearer opportunity to fight at the front.

Confidence grows ahead of Qualifying

Strømsted’s Practice performance provided an encouraging first step, but the Dane recognises that the changing conditions could quickly alter the competitive order.

TRIDENT must continue adjusting the car as temperatures rise and grip levels increase. At the same time, Strømsted must manage his tyres, find a useful slipstream and avoid traffic during what he expects to become a chaotic session.

“At the moment I feel confident, but everything changes quite a lot, so we just have to keep finding the performance in the car.”

Strømsted enters Qualifying with momentum after producing the quickest lap of the opening session. However, the Red Bull Ring will demand another precise performance as he attempts to translate that pace into his and TRIDENT’s first pole position of the season.
