The 2026 FIA Formula Regional European Championship (FREC) heads to Le Castellet from 17–19 July for the sixth of its eight scheduled rounds and the final event before the summer break.

Circuit Paul Ricard welcomes the championship at a crucial stage of the season, with only 35 points separating the leading four drivers. Eight different drivers have won races during the opening five rounds, while seven drivers have secured pole positions in the second-generation Tatuus T-326.

Rashid Al Dhaheri arrives in France at the top of the standings after strengthening his position with victory at the Hungaroring. However, Kean Nakamura-Berta, Sebastian Wheldon and Emanuele Olivieri remain within striking distance as the title fight approaches its decisive closing phase.

Al Dhaheri builds championship advantage

Al Dhaheri reclaimed control of the championship with a productive weekend at the Hungaroring.

The R-ace GP driver secured his third victory of the season in Race 2, extending his lead to 21 points over Nakamura-Berta. His results have combined outright speed with greater consistency than several of his closest challengers.

The Emirati driver also represents the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team Junior Programme and enters Le Castellet as the only competitor with three victories during the opening half of the campaign.

Nevertheless, the championship remains closely contested. One difficult result could significantly reduce Al Dhaheri’s advantage, particularly with three rounds and six races remaining after the French weekend.

Therefore, the R-ace GP driver must maintain his consistency as the championship reaches its final event before the summer break.

Nakamura-Berta remains Al Dhaheri’s closest challenger

Nakamura-Berta sits second in the Drivers’ Championship after establishing himself as one of the season’s fastest competitors.

The PREMA Racing driver has claimed two victories and regularly demonstrated strong one-lap speed. Although he left the Hungaroring 21 points behind Al Dhaheri, the margin remains smaller than the maximum score available across a complete weekend.

Consequently, Le Castellet offers Nakamura-Berta an opportunity to reduce the deficit before the championship pauses for the summer.

Strong Qualifying performances could prove particularly important at Circuit Paul Ricard. The circuit provides overtaking opportunities, but its high-speed layout and long corners can also place drivers under pressure when they follow closely.

Nakamura-Berta must therefore combine his established Qualifying pace with complete race execution if he wants to challenge Al Dhaheri’s championship lead.

Wheldon stays within title contention

Sebastian Wheldon remains firmly involved in the title fight despite slipping to third in the standings.

The MP Motorsport driver has claimed two victories this season and sits 30 points behind Al Dhaheri. His strongest weekends have demonstrated the pace required to lead the championship, although recent results have allowed his rivals to move ahead.

Wheldon now enters Le Castellet only nine points behind Nakamura-Berta. Therefore, another competitive weekend could return him to second and bring him closer to the championship lead.

The American has already shown that he can convert strong starting positions into victories. However, with the title fight tightening, he must avoid the difficult races that have prevented him from matching Al Dhaheri’s consistency.

A return to the podium before the summer break would strengthen Wheldon’s position and keep him within one race victory of the championship leader.

Olivieri combines Rookie lead with overall title challenge

Olivieri sits fourth in the overall standings and continues to lead the Rookie classification.

The R-ace GP driver claimed his first victory on home soil at Monza and has developed into one of the championship’s most consistent performers. Those results place him only 35 points behind team-mate Al Dhaheri.

His position gives R-ace GP two drivers inside the top four and creates another factor in the championship battle. Olivieri must pursue his own title ambitions while contributing points towards the team’s wider campaign.

The Italian has also established a strong position in the Rookie standings. His combination of race-winning speed and consistent points has allowed him to separate himself from several other first-year drivers.

Le Castellet gives Olivieri another opportunity to reduce his overall championship deficit while strengthening his advantage among the Rookies.

Francot and Hanna seek return to leading form

Reno Francot remains fifth in the standings, although his title challenge has lost momentum during the most recent rounds.

The CL Motorsport driver claimed victory during the opening weekend at the Red Bull Ring, delivering a landmark result for both himself and the team. However, he has not returned to the podium during the last three events.

Francot now trails Olivieri by 32 points and sits 67 behind Al Dhaheri. Therefore, he needs a strong Le Castellet weekend to maintain realistic hopes of challenging the leading group during the final rounds.

Salim Hanna also arrives in France seeking a response after a difficult Hungaroring event.

The PREMA Racing driver produced an impressive weekend at Monza, where he finished third and second. However, he failed to score in either Hungarian race and lost valuable ground to his championship rivals.

Both Francot and Hanna have already demonstrated podium pace. Nevertheless, they must rediscover that form at Circuit Paul Ricard before the summer break.

Sano carries Hungaroring momentum to France

Yuki Sano enters Round 6 with renewed confidence after securing pole position and victory in the opening Hungaroring race.

The R-ace GP driver became the seventh different pole-sitter and eighth different race winner of the season, further demonstrating the championship’s competitive depth.

His breakthrough also gave R-ace GP victories in both Hungarian races, with Al Dhaheri completing the team’s clean sweep in Race 2.

Sano will now aim to build on that performance at Le Castellet and establish himself as a regular podium contender.

Maksimilian Popov and Alexandre Munoz have also joined the winners’ group this season. The Trident Motorsport and ART Grand Prix drivers shared the victories at Spa-Francorchamps after succeeding in challenging conditions.

Munoz continues to feature prominently in the Rookie battle, while Popov has shown enough pace to challenge the championship’s established front-runners.

With eight winners from the opening 10 races, Le Castellet could produce another change to the competitive order.

Le Castellet carries strong Formula Regional history

Circuit Paul Ricard has played host to several drivers who later progressed towards the highest levels of single-seater racing.

Reigning champion Freddie Slater completed a clean sweep of both races at the French circuit in 2025. The British driver has since graduated to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, where he has established himself among the leading competitors.

Current Formula One championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli also won at Le Castellet during his 2023 Formula Regional campaign. The victory represented the third of his five wins that season.

The circuit’s long straights, technical corners and high-speed sections require drivers to balance aerodynamic efficiency with stability through the more demanding sequences.

Paul Ricard also gives teams several setup options because of its mixture of corner types. Drivers need confidence through the fast sections, but they must also protect their tyres across the longer race stints.

With the top four closely matched, preparation and Qualifying execution could play a decisive role in the championship battle.
