Qualifying 1 for the 2026 Formula E Tokyo E-Prix has been completed, with the drivers first battling through the group stages before progressing into the head-to-head Duels. View the full results here.

Edoardo Mortara entered qualifying as one of the favourites for pole position after showing strong pace in both free practice sessions. The drivers with a Porsche power unit also looked competitive, though Felipe Drugovich couldn’t take part in the qualifying session after he crashed his car in Free Practice 2 earlier.

Group stages

In Group A, Jake Dennis set the pace ahead of Nico Müller, with Nick Cassidy and Taylor Barnard also securing places in the Duels. Pascal Wehrlein narrowly missed out on progressing after being beaten by Barnard, finishing in fifth with a gap of 0.198 seconds to P4.

While Group A had a relatively clean run, both António Félix da Costa and Mitch Evans had problems with their Jaguars, as they needed to use the run-off area. Though Da Costa was able to get his car back up to speed as he went fastest in Group B, followed by Mortara, Jean-Éric Vergne and Dan Ticktum, who completed the four Duel positions. Meanwhile, Maximilian Günther was eliminated after ending the session just 0.158 seconds away from a place in the top four. Meaning that the top 3 in the Drivers’ Championship did not make it through to the Duel stages. Vergne and Zane Maloney were under investigation, as the Frenchman seemed to have impeded the Lola Yamaha ABT driver.

Duel stages

Müller knocked out Cassidy in the opening Quarter Final after showing a strong pace against the Citroën, giving the Porsche Formula E Team hope after his teammate and championship leader Wehrlein wasn’t able to continue into the duel stages. Next, Dennis demonstrated his pace by advancing against Baranard, with a gap of only 0.070 seconds.

In the third duel, Mortara defeated Vergne following a strong qualifying lap after hitting the wall slightly, leaving both Citroëns out of the Semi Final. The final Quarter Final proved to be the closest of the session, with just 0.106 seconds separating Da Costa and Ticktum at the line, as Da Costa went through to the Semi Final.

In the first Semi Final, Dennis went through into the final as Müller hit the outside wall in turn 11 after not being able to take the corner, causing a red flag to be out on track. Dennis needed to set a lap time to make it through to the Final, meaning the Briton went out on track alone ahead of the second Semi Final to set his lap ahead of the Final. Though Dennis did not try to set a new fastest lap, as he went rather slow, finishing with a lap of 1:19.531.

The second Semi Final was decided by 0.074 seconds, as Mortara overturned Da Costa’s early advantage to secure a place in the Final.

In the final duel, Dennis produced an impressive lap but close lap, gaining only 0.052 seconds on Mortara, securing his third Formula E pole position in season 12 at the Tokyo E-Prix.
