Torrin Byrne has set his sights on a first GB4 Championship victory after securing his maiden podium during his visit to Donington Park in 2026.
The Much Wenlock native charged from 17th on the grid to finish third in Race 2, completing an impressive recovery after track-limits penalties compromised his starting positions throughout the weekend.
The result rewarded the consistency that Byrne has shown during his rookie campaign and gave him renewed confidence ahead of GB4’s return to Silverstone.
Podium rewards Byrne’s underlying pace
Byrne has regularly challenged inside the top 10 during his debut GB4 season, but a podium had remained beyond his reach before Donington.
Officials deleted his Qualifying laps for track-limits violations, which left him starting 19th, 17th and 20th across the three races. Nevertheless, Byrne and his team maintained a positive approach and focused on maximising each opportunity.
“It’s quite relieving really because it’s pace that we have definitely had,” said the 17-year-old. “I think we did a very good job with the situation we had after qualifying. I don’t think the podium really shows that [fully]; we kept a very positive outlook which really helped us through the weekend.”
Although the result delivered his first trophy of the season, Byrne believes the final classification only partially reflected the quality of his performance across the round.
Opening-lap charge transforms Race 2
Byrne faced a difficult task from 17th on the Race 2 grid, with a busy midfield standing between him and the leading positions.
However, he gained nine places during the opening lap as incidents and battles unfolded around him. He then stayed clear of further trouble and continued to move forward before eventually securing third.
Amid the excitement, Byrne initially struggled to comprehend the scale of his recovery.
“It didn’t really sink in until I got back to the assembly area,” said Byrne. “We were up nine places after lap one and it was really just a race of staying out of trouble. I did that very well and we stayed out of trouble efficiently, gaining as many places as we could.”
His measured approach allowed him to capitalise on every opportunity while several rivals encountered problems.
Byrne collects valuable points
Byrne supplemented his podium with 15th in Race 1 and 10th in the reverse-grid finale.
Therefore, despite starting every contest near the rear, he left Donington with a useful points haul and further evidence of his ability to race through a crowded field.
His Race 2 performance also strengthened his confidence after a campaign in which he had consistently demonstrated top-10 pace without securing a breakthrough result.
Consequently, Byrne believes he now enters the next stage of the season in a stronger position.
Silverstone presents next opportunity
The GB4 Championship will return to Silverstone at the start of August for its second visit of the 2026 season.
Only 16 points separate the leading three drivers, while Byrne sits 73 points away from the championship lead. Although he faces a sizeable deficit, his recent form gives him optimism for the remaining rounds.
“I feel in a much stronger place now,” he said. “I’m looking forward to proving what we have again.”
Byrne will aim to carry his Donington momentum into Silverstone and convert his consistent pace into another front-running result.
Maiden victory becomes Byrne’s next target
After achieving his first podium, Byrne has already identified the next milestone he wants to reach.
The 17-year-old plans to maintain the same approach that helped him overcome adversity at Donington, while continuing to maximise the performance available at every round.
“It’s just maximising what we have all the time,” he explained. “It’s what we try to do every round and I’m sure we’ll continue to do that throughout [the season]. The win is definitely the next thing on the list.”
Byrne will now attempt to take another step forward at Silverstone as he pursues his maiden GB4 victory.
