George Russell made the perfect start to his F1 Dutch Grand Prix (GP) weekend, leading from lights to flag to claim his third Sprint victory of the 2026 season.

The Mercedes driver controlled the race throughout, managing his tyres through the early stages before turning up the pace when the fight behind him began to develop.

Speaking in the 2026 F1 Dutch GP Post-Sprint interview, Russell reflected on a race that could have had a very different ending had the rain arrived just one lap earlier.

“Yeah, obviously great start to the weekend, one more lap, the three of us were just talking [Leclerc and Norris], if it was one more lap it would have been a very potentially different end to the race so I was glad the rain came when it did but yeah, really good start,” Russell said.

“The Ferraris look really fast so yeah, it’s going to be a tight one this afternoon.”

Managing the pace out front in the Dutch GP Sprint Race

Russell’s advantage was not immediately clear in the opening stages, with the Mercedes driver appearing to manage his pace rather than attempt to build an early gap.

That strategy was deliberate, with Russell anticipating that the battle for position would intensify towards the end of the Sprint.

“Yeah, I knew if there was going to be any overtakes, it was going to be towards the end of the race so I knew I just wanted to manage my tyres a little bit through the high-speed corners and have a bit more in the tank come the end of the race,” he explained.

Russell’s approach paid off when Charles Leclerc moved into the fight behind Lando Norris, prompting the Mercedes driver to increase the pace.

“I knew if Charles got past Lando at all, he would have been fast and as soon as I saw Charles behind, I sort of dropped the hammer a little bit and the two of us pulled away.”

Looking ahead to the Grand Prix Qualifying

The victory gives Russell valuable momentum heading into Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix, with Mercedes now turning its attention to securing a strong starting position for the main event.

Despite his dominant Sprint, Russell does not expect major changes to his Mercedes setup before qualifying.

“A few tickles here and there but nothing too major and see where it leads us.”

With Ferrari showing strong pace and rain remaining a potential factor across the weekend, Russell will now look to carry his Sprint form into qualifying and put Mercedes in contention for another strong result on Sunday.
