Sebastian Wheldon will step up to the FIA Formula 3 (F3) Championship in 2027 after signing with TRIDENT Motorsport for his rookie campaign.
The Italian outfit confirmed the American driver will join its line-up next season following an impressive 2026 Formula Regional European Championship (FREC) campaign, in which he finished second in the Drivers’ Championship.
Wheldon has steadily progressed through the junior single-seater ranks since making his debut in 2023, when he won the Skip Barber Formula Race Series with six victories.
He continued his development in 2024, finishing second in the YACademy Winter Series before securing third place in the USF Juniors championship.
The American then enjoyed a productive 2025 campaign across multiple Formula 4 categories, collecting seven victories in the F4 Middle East, E4 and Italian F4 Championships.
His Italian F4 campaign proved particularly successful, with Wheldon finishing third overall after recording six wins, three pole positions and nine podiums.
Wheldon carried that momentum into 2026, finishing runner-up in FREC to secure his move into FIA F3 with TRIDENT in 2027.
Stepping up from FREC to F3
Speaking about his signing, Wheldon said he was excited to take the next step in his career with the Italian team.
“I’m very happy to be competing in the 2027 FIA Formula 3 Championship with TRIDENT Motorsport. There’s a lot of pressure, as I’ll be racing for one of the most successful teams in the category. However, I love a challenge and will give my all to learn quickly and achieve good results. I’m extremely grateful to TWG and Andretti Global for their support. I can’t wait for next season to begin. Let’s go!”
TRIDENT Team Manager Giacomo Ricci welcomed Wheldon to the team, highlighting the American’s development across his junior career and his performance in FRECA.
“We are delighted to announce our agreement with Sebastian Wheldon for the 2027 FIA Formula 3 Championship season. Sebastian is a driver who has demonstrated consistent growth throughout his career, distinguishing himself both in the United States and Europe. His 2026 Formula Regional season, which he finished in second place, confirmed his talent and ability to compete at the highest level. We are confident that Trident Motorsport represents the ideal environment to support him in the next step of his promising career.”
Wheldon will now prepare for his FIA Formula 3 debut in 2027, joining TRIDENT as he looks to continue his progression through the single-seater ranks and challenge for results in one of junior motorsport’s most competitive championships.
