Juan Manuel Correa is continuing his single seater career in the USA, joining HMD Motorsports in the Indy NXT series. The Ecuadorian American comes over from a long Europe stint in the Formula 1 feeder series. He finished 18th in last year’s FIA Formula 2 season.
“I’m incredibly excited to join the HMD Motorsports family and compete in INDY NXT in 2025,” Correa said. “This opportunity is a huge step in my career, and I’m looking forward to applying everything I’ve learned in my previous experiences to the upcoming races. The support from the team has been amazing, and I’m ready to give my best on track.”
Laying the foundations for a US career
Perhaps best known for his involvement in the horrible crash at Spa-Francorchamps that saw Antoine Hubert succumb to his injuries, Correa spent a long time recovering from his shattered legs. Nonetheless he managed to return to racing. After joining the FIA Formula 3 grid in 2021, he again took part in Formula 2 in 2023 and 2024.
By switching to the other side of the Atlantic, Correa hopes to lay the foundations for a fruitful US career. A career in which he aims to reach the IndyCar series in the future.
“We are thrilled to welcome Juan Manuel Correa to HMD,” added Team President Mike Maurini. “We have been in contact for a while, and when we crossed paths last week at Barber Motorsports Park, I had asked if he was interested in racing in INDY NXT. Less than 24 hours later a deal was done, and 36 hours later, he was on a plane to Indy.
“His extensive racing background, including his years in the European ladder program, shows the level of talent and determination he brings to the table. His ability to overcome adversity and continue pursuing his passion for motorsport is second to none. We’re confident that Juan will be a great asset to our team as we continue to push for success in INDY NXT, and we hope that we can help him in his goal to advance to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.”
The plan is for Correa to race in seven events and participate in two oval tests. He debuts coming weekend in Indianapolis.
