The decision has been made: Maserati is set to leave Formula E after the London E-Prix. Reportedly, from the upcoming season onwards, Citroen will take over the MSG Racing team.

Maserati to leave Formula E after three years

According to Il Messaggero the decision has been made by the bosses of Maserati to leave the electric series. The sports brand will concentrate on GT racing with combustion engines.

The engagement of Maserati in Formula E started in December 2022 with the Season 9 pre-season testing in Valencia. Together with the newly named MSG Racing – formerly known as Venturi – Maserati entered the electric series.

Maximilian Günther and Edoardo Mortara formed the first line-up of the Monegasque team. Jehan Daruvala has also made his Formula E debut for Maserati, who features as drivers for Season 11 Stoffel Vandoorne and Jake Hughes.

Citroen to take over as second Stellantis team?

Furthermore, new information emerged, as e-Formel.de reports: Citroen will take over the MSG Racing team. It’s understood that next to Citroen, Opel is being connected with an entry for Season 13. Both are part of Stellantis, who want two marques in Formula E.

It remains to be seen, if Opel will take over from DS Automobiles or even appear as a third Stellantis team, the respected German portal continues to write.

Current situation in the teams market

In Season 12, it’s very likely that only 10 teams will be on the grid, as McLaren leaves the series. No investor was found to take over the team, so the licence has been returned to Formula E.

What also seems to happen is that DS and Penske will split in the Gen4 era. As a result, Stellantis might enter as a works team in Season 13. The French manufacturer would take the licence vacated by McLaren.
