The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has launched a dedicated task force to tackle the escalating challenges surrounding global motorsport insurance. Spearheaded by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and co-led by the organisation’s Secretary Generals for Sport and Mobility, the initiative seeks to bring much-needed clarity and action to a pressing issue threatening the sustainability of the sport.
The newly formed FIA Motorsport Insurance Task Force brings together cross-disciplinary expertise from both the mobility and motorsport sides of the federation. Its primary objective is to support FIA Member Clubs as they face rising premiums, limited coverage options, and increasing uncertainty within the insurance market.
Mounting insurance costs threaten accessibility
With insurance costs rising rapidly and coverage becoming increasingly difficult to obtain, the situation has placed additional strain on organisers, competitors, and clubs—particularly those operating at grassroots level. As a result, many within the sport have raised concerns about long-term accessibility and viability.
Recognising the potential consequences, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem underlined the federation’s responsibility to step in with a coordinated response: “Our Members are at the heart of everything we do at the FIA, delivering outstanding work worldwide in both sport and mobility. As their federation, it is our duty to provide clarity, guidance, and representation in global governance on issues that shape the future of motorsport.”
He also reiterated the FIA’s wider commitment to making the sport viable for future generations.
“The FIA is committed to ensuring motorsport and mobility are safe, sustainable, affordable, and accessible, while driving global growth. Rising insurance costs risk limiting opportunities and undermining accessibility across the world. To address this, we must work hand in hand with our Clubs, insurers, and local authorities to deliver solutions that keep our sport safe, fair, and sustainable for all.”
Protecting pathways into the sport
As the person responsible for overseeing the FIA’s global sporting activities, Valerio Iachizzi, Secretary General for Sport, also voiced serious concern about the impact rising insurance costs are already having on the lower levels of the racing pyramid.
He stressed the importance of preserving access to competition and described the FIA’s strategy moving forward: “Motorsport thrives on opportunity and accessibility. Rising insurance costs present a serious challenge to maintaining this ecosystem, particularly for grassroots competitors and organisers.”
“Working closely with our Clubs, promoters, and insurers, the FIA is determined to safeguard pathways into our sport and ensure that motorsport remains open and achievable for future generations around the world.”
Mobility sector experience offers key insights
The task force includes more than just the sport side of the federation. In fact, Willem Groenewald, Secretary General for Mobility and Sustainability, emphasises that the FIA can apply lessons from its broader work in road safety and insurance directly to motor sport. Drawing from his experience in mobility policy and consumer protection, Groenewald highlighted the value of cross-sector knowledge and emphasised the importance of intersectoral collaboration.
“In mobility, affordability and safety are central to delivering sustainable transport solutions, and these principles are directly relevant to the challenges motorsport is now facing.”
“Our experience in working with governments, regulators, and the insurance sector to protect consumers and keep mobility accessible provides us with valuable expertise that can also benefit our sport.”

The FIA Motorsport Insurance Task Force has already commenced its work, undertaking a comprehensive assessment of the current motorsport insurance landscape. As part of its mandate, the task force will examine the scale, scope, and impact of the challenges faced by clubs and organisers; identify the underlying causes and systemic factors driving rising premiums and reduced access; develop metrics and benchmarks to evaluate the financial and operational implications; and assess the long-term risks to the future of motorsport if the issue remains unaddressed. Through a data-driven and consultative approach, the task force aims to deliver both strategic guidance and practical, actionable solutions to support FIA Member Clubs around the world.
Interim report due in December
With the evaluation phase underway, the task force is preparing to share its initial findings at the FIA Annual General Assemblies, scheduled for December 2025 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The interim report will help lay the groundwork for long-term policy recommendations and further engagement with global stakeholders.
This initiative reflects the FIA’s broader mission to ensure that both mobility and motorsport remain accessible, sustainable, and resilient, even amid shifting economic and regulatory landscapes.
