ART Grand Prix’s Victor Martins returned to the top step at the 2025 Qatar GP, securing his first F2 Feature Race victory since 2023. But the bigger milestone belonged to Invicta Racing’s Leonardo Fornaroli, who mathematically sealed the Drivers’ Championship on Sunday with a composed run to second place on Sunday, after a strong Saturday.
A champion’s weekend
Fornaroli entered the Qatar round with momentum and confidence, topping Free Practice before inheriting pole position after Oliver Goethe’s grid penalty. His Sprint Race points ensured the title was his with one round remaining, but the Italian approached Sunday’s Feature Race with the same methodical precision that has defined his season. Lining up alongside polesitter Martins, he slotted into second at the start and managed both pressure and tyre wear with championship-winning composure.
Martins back on form
A perfect launch allowed Martins to seize early control of the race. Behind him, Dunne, Staněk, Goethe, and Montoya were embroiled in early battles, while Fornaroli reported tyre concerns just a few laps in. The first round of pit stops shuffled the order, but Martins’ out-lap—despite a slow service—was strong enough to keep him ahead of Fornaroli.
Further down the order, various incidents shaped the midfield fight: Dürksen and Montoya ran through gravel, unsafe releases triggered penalties for Dunne and Tsolov, and Hitech’s bold alternate-tyre approach briefly put Beganovic in contention for a surprise late-race charge.
Safety Car shakes up strategy
Goethe’s retirement on Lap 20 brought out a Safety Car and neutralised Beganovic’s blistering pace. When racing resumed, the Swede charged ahead but eventually had to pit with just a few laps to go, rejoining outside the points. Dunne fought past Lindblad for what became a critical move in the upper midfield, while Verschoor’s sixth place ultimately fell short of extending the title fight to Abu Dhabi.
Martins wins, Fornaroli celebrates
Martins crossed the line to take a deserved victory, ending a two-year wait for Feature Race success. Fornaroli followed him home, fittingly celebrating his championship with a podium finish. Dunne completed an excellent weekend with third place ahead of Lindblad, Montoya, and Verschoor.
