Formula 2 (F2) returned ahead of the final race weekend before the summer break, with Round 9 taking the paddock to Budapest for the 2026 Hungarian GP. Free Practice opened the weekend’s action.

A handful of drivers headed out early and set about their first flying laps, though conditions clearly hadn’t settled. Both Dürksen and Câmara ran wide at the final corner as they searched for grip on a still-improving surface. Câmara nonetheless emerged as the early pacesetter, going over half a second clear with a 1:31.484. Herta then climbed to second, trailing Câmara by 0.416 seconds, before Montoya slotted into second himself, just 0.142 seconds back, with Minì rounding out the early top three.

A red flag interrupted proceedings soon after when Mari Boya crashed into the barrier at Turn 1, bringing the session to a temporary halt.

Once the green light returned, the drivers rejoined the track with five minutes remaining. Minì set a new benchmark with a 1:30.744, and Tsolov followed in second, 0.388 seconds off the pace. Beganovic then went quickest with a 1:30.720, only for Tsolov to reclaim top spot with a 1:30.603, a time the stewards later deleted for exceeding track limits at the final corner.

That deletion promoted Minì back to second, just 0.015 seconds behind Beganovic, who had failed to improve on his final lap despite setting a purple final sector. Further down the order, Stenshorne moved up to seventh, while Tsolov and Dunne both found late improvement to climb into fourth and fifth.

When the chequered flag fell, Beganovic topped the session ahead of Minì and Varrone, with Tsolov fourth, Câmara fifth and Dunne completing the top six.
