Porsche Formula E Team’s Pascal Wehrlein secured pole position for Race 1 of the 2026 Formula E Shanghai E-Prix after defeating Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans in the final Duel of Qualifying. Evans and Wehrlein had already led the way through the group stages, topping Group A and Group B respectively, before both drivers converted that pace into final appearances. However, Wehrlein ultimately held the advantage when it mattered most, taking pole and three championship points after a composed run through the knockout stages.

Evans and Wehrlein lead the charge into the Duels

Qualifying at the 2026 Formula E Shanghai E-Prix began with Group A, as Cupra Kiro’s Pepe Martí led the 10 drivers on track. Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team’s Lucas di Grassi set the first benchmark before Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans, Andretti Formula E Team’s Jake Dennis, Envision Racing’s Sébastien Buemi, Porsche Formula E Team’s Nico Müller, Mahindra Racing’s Edoardo Mortara and Martí improved. Dennis lowered the time to 1:10.225, before Evans went fastest with a 1:10.175. Citroën Racing’s Jean-Éric Vergne moved into fourth, while DS Penske’s Taylor Barnard recovered from a late start but missed the Duels by 0.004s. Evans topped Group A ahead of Dennis, Buemi and Vergne.

With Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans setting the Group A benchmark at 1:10.175, Group B began with Citroën Racing’s Nick Cassidy leading the field out. Cupra Kiro’s Dan Ticktum set the early pace with a 1:17.804 before Nissan Formula E Team’s Norman Nato improved to 1:12.444. However, Porsche Formula E Team’s Pascal Wehrlein soon delivered the decisive lap, posting a 1:10.125 to move fastest overall. Nato returned to the pits early, while Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team’s Zane Maloney briefly entered the top four. Jaguar TCS Racing’s António Félix da Costa, DS Penske’s Maximilian Günther and Ticktum improved late, but none challenged Wehrlein. Wehrlein, da Costa, Günther and Ticktum advanced to the Duels.

Wehrlein takes pole after competitive duels

Porsche Formula E Team’s Pascal Wehrlein converted his Group B pace into pole position after a commanding run through the Duels at the 2026 Shanghai E-Prix.

Andretti Formula E Team’s Jake Dennis opened the quarter-finals with a 1:09.269, beating Envision Racing’s Sébastien Buemi by 0.237s. Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans then continued his strong Qualifying form, defeating Citroën Racing’s Jean-Éric Vergne by 0.335s with a 1:09.209.

DS Penske’s Maximilian Günther delivered the quickest quarter-final time outside Wehrlein’s run, setting a 1:09.188 to beat Jaguar TCS Racing’s António Félix da Costa by 0.174s. However, Wehrlein raised the standard immediately afterwards, producing a 1:08.955 to knock out Cupra Kiro’s Dan Ticktum by 0.192s.

The semi-finals then brought two decisive head-to-head battles. Evans beat Dennis by 0.174s with a 1:09.132, keeping Jaguar in contention for pole. Wehrlein responded by defeating Günther by 0.377s, setting a 1:09.046 to reach the final with momentum.

In the final, Evans could not match Wehrlein’s pace. The Porsche driver set a 1:09.260 and beat the Jaguar driver by 0.203s, securing pole position and the coveted three points.
