The 2026 Formula Regional Americas Championship (FRAC) crowned its champion during Round 7 at VIRginia International Raceway (VIR), as Brady Golan secured the Drivers’ Championship with one event still remaining. Kekai Hauanio denied the championship leader victory in Saturday’s opening contest, following Golan for much of the race before making a late move at Turn 1 to claim his third win of the season. Golan responded in Sunday’s finale, passing Hauanio during a one-lap shootout to take his seventh victory of 2026 and mathematically secure the title.
The weekend proved far more difficult for Golan’s closest championship rivals. Evagoras Papasavvas failed to score after contact with Cooper Shipman in Race 1 and a crash while running second in Race 2, while Shipman also left the opening contest without points. Aidan Schuh, meanwhile, produced one of the strongest performances of his season by claiming his maiden FRAC podium in the finale. In the Masters Cup, Kevin Janzen swept both races and reduced Whitney Strickland’s championship advantage to 16.5 points.
Golan leads 2026 FRAC VIR Qualifying
Golan established himself as the driver to beat before Qualifying had even begun. The Toney Driver Development driver topped Friday’s Practice session with a 1:46.816, finishing 0.230s ahead of teammate Christian Bogle. Papasavvas followed in third with a 1:47.730, while Luke Powers and Shipman completed the top five. Hauanio ranked sixth ahead of Schuh, Harbir Dass and Alejandro Bobadilla.
The championship leader improved considerably when the field returned for Qualifying on Saturday morning. His 1:45.962 secured his third pole position of the season and placed him in the strongest possible position to increase the 10.5-point championship advantage he had carried into VIR. Shipman came closest to denying him, finishing only 0.134s behind, while Hauanio secured third with a 1:46.326.
Bogle qualified fourth, with Papasavvas only 0.004s behind him in fifth. That represented a difficult start to the weekend for Papasavvas, who had arrived as Golan’s principal championship rival but now found himself more than one second behind the championship leader and with three cars separating them on the Race 1 grid. Powers qualified sixth ahead of Dass and Schuh, while Eric Wisniewski and Bobadilla completed the top 10. Aiden Zelaya, Kevin Janzen and Robert Arana Jr rounded out the grid, with officials removing the fastest laps recorded by Zelaya and Wisniewski after each caused a suspension of the session.

Golan and Hauanio break away in Race 1
Golan retained the advantage when Saturday afternoon’s opening race began, but Hauanio quickly established himself as the championship leader’s primary challenger. Shipman had started alongside Golan on the front row, yet Hauanio wasted little time moving forward. The Crosslink Motorsports driver pulled alongside Shipman through the Esses and completed the pass for second, allowing him to begin concentrating on Golan ahead.
Behind them, Papasavvas moved past Bogle and began applying pressure to Shipman. With the championship already beginning to swing towards Golan, Papasavvas needed to make progress quickly, but instead his battle with Shipman effectively removed both of Golan’s closest championship rivals from contention for the leading positions.
Papasavvas attacked Shipman on Lap 3 as the pair entered Turn 4, but contact between them caused considerable damage to both cars. The front wing on Papasavvas’ car broke apart, while Shipman sustained a right-rear puncture and both were forced into the pits for repairs. Shipman lost eight laps while Kiwi Motorsport worked to return him to the circuit, while Papasavvas also lost significant time and was later penalised for the collision.
The incident transformed the championship situation. Golan had entered VIR only 10.5 points ahead of Papasavvas and 47 ahead of Shipman, so with both of his main rivals now facing likely non-scores, even second place would deliver a substantial gain. Golan still had to contend with Hauanio, however, and the Crosslink driver remained directly behind the polesitter for much of the race rather than forcing an early attack.
With around five minutes remaining, Hauanio finally made his move into Turn 1. Golan initially remained ahead but ran slightly wide through the corner, providing his rival with the opportunity to complete the pass and move into first. Golan had little opportunity to respond before Bogle slowed on circuit with a problem, prompting officials to deploy a full-course caution. The race never returned to green, allowing Hauanio to cross the line under yellow and secure his third victory of 2026.
Golan finished only 0.288s behind in second and recorded his 12th podium of the season, while Powers produced one of the strongest recoveries of the race. After dropping as far as 10th during the early stages, the Toney Driver Development rookie climbed through the field to finish third. Bobadilla moved from 10th on the grid into fourth, with Schuh fifth ahead of Dass and Wisniewski.
Arana also achieved an important milestone for Jensen Global Advisors. Competing in only his second FRAC weekend, the rookie finished eighth and collected his first championship points. Janzen, meanwhile, continued the momentum he had established at CTMP by taking another Masters Cup victory, reducing the gap to Strickland before Sunday’s second contest.

Hauanio leads as Papasavvas fights back in Race 2
Hauanio’s fastest lap from Saturday placed him on pole for Sunday’s finale and gave him an opportunity to complete a VIR sweep. Golan joined him on the front row, while championship contenders Papasavvas and Shipman occupied Row 2. Hauanio converted pole into the early lead and immediately began opening an advantage, while Golan settled into second before coming under pressure from Papasavvas.
Papasavvas found his opportunity at the exit of Turn 12 and completed the pass on Golan for second. The move placed him directly behind Hauanio and temporarily provided him with a route back into the championship contest. Golan then suffered several brake lock-ups and began losing contact with the Crosslink pair, but Papasavvas’ recovery ended abruptly before the halfway point.
The Crosslink driver went off at Turn 12 and hit the tyre barrier, bringing his race to an immediate end and triggering the Safety Car. It completed a scoreless VIR weekend for the driver who had entered the event only 10.5 points away from the championship lead, while simultaneously creating a clear route for Golan to secure the title.
With Papasavvas out of the race, Golan could mathematically secure the championship by winning. Hauanio had controlled the opening half of the contest and held an advantage of more than four seconds before the Safety Car erased the gap, placing Golan directly behind him for the restart.
Golan attacked immediately when racing resumed and attempted a move into Turn 1, but Hauanio defended successfully and retained first. The Crosslink driver was unable to rebuild his previous advantage before another incident interrupted the race. Powers and Shipman had already made contact at Turn 10, compromising Shipman’s afternoon, while a later incident involving Zelaya produced another Safety Car. Powers subsequently received a 30-second penalty for his contact with Shipman.
One-lap shootout decides 2026 FRAC championship
By the time the circuit was cleared, only one racing lap remained, creating a simultaneous green-and-white-flag restart with Hauanio leading Golan. The race victory and championship were therefore effectively decided over one final lap around VIR.
Golan immediately moved to the inside approaching Turn 1 and, unlike at the previous restart, completed the pass to emerge from the corner ahead. Hauanio remained directly behind the championship leader throughout the final lap but could not create another opportunity to retake the position.
Golan crossed the line only 0.281s ahead, securing his seventh victory of the campaign. More importantly, the result increased his championship total sufficiently to put the Drivers’ Championship beyond Papasavvas’ reach with only the Barber finale remaining.
Behind them, Schuh produced the best result of his Formula Regional career. The Crosslink rookie avoided the incidents ahead and climbed into podium contention before crossing the line third, only 1.350s behind Golan. The result secured Schuh’s first FRAC podium and a new career-best finish, completing a strong VIR weekend after his fifth place in Race 1.
Janzen also completed a perfect Masters Cup weekend with another class victory in Race 2. His fifth win of the season further reduced Strickland’s championship advantage, ensuring the Masters Cup would remain undecided heading into Barber.

Golan becomes 2026 FRAC champion
Golan arrived at VIR with only a 10.5-point advantage after taking the championship lead away from Papasavvas at CTMP, but two races later the contest was mathematically over. Second place in Race 1 and victory in Race 2 gave Golan another major points haul, while Papasavvas’ two non-scores created an insurmountable advantage with only two races remaining.
The title represents the culmination of a season in which Golan has combined race victories with consistent podium finishes. His VIR success also secured the $100,000 prize attached to the FR Americas Drivers’ Championship and delivered Toney Driver Development its first FRAC Drivers’ Championship.

Hauanio strengthens position after another strong weekend
Hauanio matched Golan as one of the standout drivers at VIR, taking victory on Saturday before narrowly losing out in Sunday’s finale. His results moved him further into contention among the leading positions in the championship and continued an increasingly strong second half of the season.
Shipman retained third despite a difficult weekend compromised by his Race 1 contact with Papasavvas and his Race 2 incident with Powers. Powers and Bogle remained closely matched behind him, while Dass, Bobadilla and Schuh continued their own battles further down the top 10.
Schuh’s breakthrough weekend was particularly significant. Fifth place in Race 1 and his maiden podium in Race 2 delivered one of his best combined weekends of the season and provided Crosslink Motorsports with another strong points haul in the Teams’ Championship.
Teams’ Championship remains separated by 14 points
Although Golan settled the Drivers’ Championship, the Teams’ Championship remains unresolved. Toney Driver Development entered VIR 14 points ahead of Crosslink Motorsports, and remarkably both teams added the same number of points across the two-race weekend.
Golan, Powers and Bogle maintained Toney Driver Development’s advantage, while Hauanio, Schuh and Bobadilla ensured Crosslink remained within striking distance. The gap therefore stays at 14 points heading into the final two races, leaving the teams’ title as one of the major championships still to be decided at Barber.
Kiwi Motorsport remains third, while Atlantic Racing Team and Hillenburg Motorsports continue their battle further down the standings.

Drivers’ title settled as FRAC heads to Barber
VIR ultimately transformed what had been a close championship fight into an early coronation. Golan entered the weekend only 10.5 points ahead of Papasavvas, but the latter’s collision with Shipman on Saturday and his Sunday crash left him without a point across the penultimate event. Golan capitalised fully, combining second place in the opener with a championship-clinching victory in the finale.
Hauanio nevertheless emerged as one of the weekend’s strongest performers. His late Race 1 pass prevented Golan from sweeping the event, while he came within 0.281s of delaying the championship celebration in Race 2. Schuh also left Virginia with his first Formula Regional podium, while Janzen’s Masters Cup sweep ensured that at least one major championship battle remains alive.
FRAC now heads to Barber Motorsports Park from October 16–18 for the final two races of the 2026 season. Golan will arrive as the confirmed Drivers’ Champion, but Toney Driver Development and Crosslink Motorsports remain separated by only 14 points in the Teams’ Championship, while Strickland and Janzen will decide the Masters Cup during the season finale.
