The FIA Formula Regional European Championship (FREC) heads to the Hungaroring from 3–5 July for the fifth round of the 2026 campaign, just two weeks after the previous event at Monza.
Located on the outskirts of Budapest, the 4.381-kilometre circuit will host the championship before welcoming Formula 1 later this month. As the series moves beyond the halfway point of its eight-round season, the title battle remains one of the closest in recent years.
Seven different drivers have won the opening 10 races, including two Rookies, while fewer than 50 points separate the top five in the standings. With three different championship leaders already this season, the fight for the title remains finely poised.
Wheldon returns to the top of the standings
Sebastian Wheldon arrives in at the 2026 FREC Hungaroring Round having reclaimed the championship lead following a productive weekend at Monza.
The MP Motorsport driver responded after surrendering top spot at Spa-Francorchamps, moving back to the summit of the standings thanks to another consistent weekend. Victories at Zandvoort remain the highlight of his campaign, while three further podium finishes have helped establish a seven-point advantage at the top.
Although the margin is slim, Wheldon once again carries the championship lead into a pivotal weekend as the season enters its second half.
Nakamura-Berta continues to apply pressure
Kean Nakamura-Berta remains Wheldon’s closest challenger after another impressive start to the campaign with PREMA Racing.
The British-Japanese driver sits just seven points adrift after claiming two victories and demonstrating exceptional one-lap pace throughout the season. Four pole positions underline his Qualifying speed, making him one of the favourites heading into another circuit where grid position is expected to prove crucial.
With the gap remaining within a single race victory, Nakamura-Berta has every opportunity to return to the top of the standings this weekend.
Al Dhaheri remains firmly in contention
Rashid Al Dhaheri also remains firmly involved in the championship fight as one of the most consistent performers of the season.
The R-ace GP driver has claimed two victories and five podium finishes from the opening 10 races, while scoring points in all but one event so far. Those results leave him 15 points behind Wheldon, keeping him well within striking distance of the championship lead.
With all three leading contenders separated by relatively few points, another strong weekend could significantly reshape the title battle.
Olivieri strengthens Rookie advantage
Monza proved to be a breakthrough event for Emanuele Olivieri, who celebrated his maiden victory in the championship and climbed to fourth in the overall standings.
The R-ace GP rookie now sits 21 points behind teammate Al Dhaheri while continuing to lead the Rookie classification by 48 points over ART Grand Prix’s Alexandre Munoz.
Munoz enjoyed his own breakthrough at Spa-Francorchamps, mastering wet conditions to secure his maiden victory before sharing the Belgian weekend’s victories with Trident Motorsport’s Maksimilian Popov. Both drivers continue to establish themselves among the championship’s leading newcomers.
Francot climbs into the top five
Reno Francot arrives at the Hungaroring fifth in the standings following his landmark victory at Spielberg.
The Dutch driver’s success delivered CL Motorsport’s first-ever FIA Formula Regional European Championship victory and has moved him ahead of Salim Hanna in the standings.
Meanwhile, PREMA Racing’s Colombian driver Hanna heads to Hungary after making his FIA Formula 3 debut at the Red Bull Ring last weekend. His promotion made him the first driver from the second-generation Tatuus T-326 era to graduate to the next step of the FIA single-seater ladder.
Competitive field continues to produce new podium finishers
The depth of competition throughout the 2026 field has been reflected by the variety of podium finishers across the opening four rounds.
Thirteen different drivers have already reached the podium this season, including Rodin Motorsport teammates Alex Ninovic and Reza Seewooruthun, MP Motorsport’s Alexander Abkhazava and Van Amersfoort Racing’s Andrea Dupé.
Most recently, R-ace GP’s Yuki Sano secured his maiden podium by finishing third in Race 3 at Monza, adding yet another new name to the growing list of front-runners.
With so many drivers demonstrating podium pace, the Hungaroring could easily produce another first-time winner.
Lisle set for championship debut
The 2026 FREC Hungaroring weekend will also welcome a new face to the FIA Formula Regional European Championship grid.
Nineteen-year-old Australian Noah Lisle is set to make his series debut with CL Motorsport as the championship field expands once again.
The debut gives Lisle his first opportunity to compete in Europe’s premier Formula Regional championship as he begins his campaign alongside the established grid.
Hungaroring presents a different challenge
The Hungaroring provides a significant contrast to Monza’s high-speed layout.
Its technical sequence of medium- and slow-speed corners places a greater emphasis on aerodynamic performance, tyre management and precision through long, flowing corners. Overtaking opportunities are traditionally limited, making Qualifying particularly important around the Hungarian circuit.
With the championship battle becoming increasingly intense, every point available this weekend could prove vital as the second half of the season gathers momentum.

Track action begins on Thursday with two 90-minute Collective Test sessions.
