The early laps in group 1 resulted in Santino Ferrucci determining the pace. For the second set of laps, Mick Schumacher was the first to go to the top, but eventually it was the Penske duo of David Malukas and Scott McLaughlin who took the top spots.

Nolan Siegel was on top after the first flying laps, followed by Christian Rasmussen, who also tried to imitate Zanardi in the Corkscrew. However, in the end Mr. Laguna Seca Álex Palou topped the sheets.

The shoot-out for the fast six started with Malukas putting in the fastest banker lap before the all the drivers would get the soft tyres put on. And with the softs on, it was Palou ahead of the two remaining Penske drivers, while Lundgaard dropped Kirkwood out in an ultimate effort.

In the battle for pole, the Penske duo and Alexander Rossi were the only ones to set a banker lap, meaning Palou, Rosenqvist and Lundgaard decided to just go for it in one go. Palou looked like to grab the pole again, but a last second effort by McLaughlin put the Kiwi on pole.
