2026 Italian F4 | Round 5: Imola | Sammalisto doubles up as Craigie takes Rookie lead

Luka Sammalisto strengthened his control of the 2026 Italian F4 Championship with two victories across an eventful fifth round at Imola. Edward Robinson opened the weekend with victory in Race 1, Sammalisto controlled Race 2, Kenzo Craigie defeated the championship leader in Race 3 and Sammalisto responded by winning the Final.

Sammalisto arrived at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari with 288 points and a 55-point advantage over David Cosma-Cristofor. His Race 2 and Final victories, combined with second place behind Craigie in Race 3, produced another 86 points and increased his championship total to 374. Cosma-Cristofor ends Round 5 on 275, leaving the US Racing driver 99 points clear with two events remaining.

Craigie produced another standout weekend after his breakthrough Mugello victory. The R-ACE GP driver finished second in Race 1, won Race 3 and returned to second in the Final, collecting 82 championship points and three Rookie victories. His results lifted him from seventh to fifth overall and, more importantly, moved him ahead of Alp Aksoy in the Rookie Trophy. Robinson also enjoyed one of his strongest weekends, combining his opening victory with third places in Race 2 and the Final.

The Imola event featured 49 verified drivers and again required the championship’s group format. Organisers split the field into two series for Friday running before allocating drivers to three groups for the preliminary races. Each driver contested two of the three group races, with the strongest performers progressing to the 36-car Final.

2026 Italian F4: Imola: Free Practice: Pedersen and Coronel lead opening sessions

Following Thursday’s pre-event testing, where Craigie topped the morning before Sammalisto set the fastest overall time in the afternoon, the competitive weekend began with the field divided across two Free Practice series.

Dean Pedersen made an immediate impression on his Italian F4 debut with CRAM Motorsport by topping the first Series 1 session. The American recorded a 1:46.576 to finish 0.142s ahead of Sammalisto, while James Anagnostidis placed third for R-ACE GP.

Craigie followed in fourth ahead of Roman Kamyab and Aksoy, while Oscar Repetto, Christian Costoya, Bader Al Sulaiti and Knud Nielsen completed the top 10. The session also featured extensive track-limit deletions, while Bautista Acosta completed no representative lap.

Rocco Coronel led the second half of the field for AKM Motorsport. The Rookie set a 1:46.841 and beat Van Amersfoort Racing’s Alex Ruta by 0.150s, while Jensen Burnett placed third for R-ACE GP.

Ary Bansal followed in fourth ahead of Andy Consani and Robinson. Noah Killion, Niccolò Maccagnani, Arjen Kräling and Ludovico Busso completed the top 10, with 0.538s covering the leading 10 drivers.

Aksoy and Robinson take over in Free Practice 2

Aksoy moved PREMA to the front when Series 1 returned for its second session. His 1:46.337 represented the fastest Free Practice time from either group and put him only 0.057s ahead of Sammalisto.

Bearman followed another 0.026s behind, with Craigie and Costoya completing the top five. Teo Borenstein, Kamyab, Repetto, Arn and Pedersen followed, while Savinkov completed only two laps and failed to record a representative time.

Robinson narrowly missed Aksoy’s overall benchmark when Series 2 completed Friday’s Free Practice running. The US Racing driver set a 1:46.365 and finished 0.131s clear of Consani.

Ruta remained competitive in third, while Cosma-Cristofor and Bansal put themselves inside the top five. Busso followed in sixth ahead of Ruykov, Westcott, Coronel and Maccagnani.

2026 Italian F4: Imola: Qualifying: Sammalisto and Robinson lead respective series

Sammalisto returned to Italian F4 pole position for the first time since the opening Misano round when he topped Qualifying Series 1. The championship leader posted a 1:45.943, but Craigie came within just 0.021s on his final effort.

Bearman took third, with Costoya and Aksoy completing the top five. Kamyab followed ahead of Toniolo, Arn, Pedersen and Weiss. Acosta did not set a representative time.

Official Qualifying Series 1 classification

The second qualifying series suffered an early red flag, but Robinson ultimately produced its fastest lap. His 1:46.057 left Bansal 0.147s behind and Cosma-Cristofor another 0.038s back.

Busso finished fourth ahead of Ruta and Consani, while Ruykov led the next group from Burnett, Zheng and Maccagnani. Fogaça’s lap was deleted after he caused the red flag, leaving him without a representative qualifying time.

2026 Italian F4: Imola: Race 1: Robinson holds off Craigie

Robinson started the Groups B-C contest from pole and immediately retained the lead, with Craigie settling into second and Bearman holding third. Busso gained one position into fourth, while Fogaça retired before completing a lap.

Craigie remained within striking distance throughout the 25-minute contest and repeatedly reduced Robinson’s advantage. However, the US Racing driver responded whenever the Mercedes junior closed in and eventually crossed the line 0.560s ahead. Bearman completed the podium, while Busso, Consani and Aksoy followed.

Pedersen received a five-second penalty following contact with Arn. Officials later applied 25-second penalties to Borenstein, Arn, Martinese, Westcott, Ferreira, Nielsen, Simek, Walther and Orsini, heavily reshaping the lower half of the classification. Craigie won the Rookie category, while Panzeri finished as the highest Women’s Trophy driver.

2026 Italian F4: Imola: Race 2: Sammalisto controls race as Ruta charges to second

Sammalisto retained first from pole when Groups A and B met later on Saturday. Bansal initially moved past Robinson into second, while Ruta immediately climbed from seventh to fifth and began working his way towards the leaders.

Ruta eventually passed Bansal before overtaking Robinson at Rivazza with nine minutes remaining. However, Sammalisto had already established enough of an advantage to control the closing stages and secured his eighth victory of the season by 1.735s. Ruta took his maiden Italian F4 podium and set the fastest lap, while Robinson completed the top three.

Bearman finished fourth ahead of Bansal, while Toniolo secured sixth overall and the Rookie victory. Felbermayr finished 18th and led the Women’s Trophy classification. Busso completed the race on the road but was subsequently disqualified under Stewards’ Decision No. 21.

2026 Italian F4: Imola: Race 3: Craigie defeats Sammalisto

Craigie made the decisive move almost immediately in Sunday morning’s Groups A-C contest. Sammalisto started from pole, but the R-ACE GP driver drew alongside and completed his pass through Tamburello to take the lead.

A small mistake at Villeneuve briefly allowed Sammalisto to close, but Craigie remained ahead and resisted further pressure from the championship leader. Bansal held third from Cosma-Cristofor and Costoya, while Gender’s late trip into the gravel triggered a Safety Car that carried the field to the chequered flag.

Craigie therefore secured his second Italian F4 victory in succession after winning the Mugello Final. He also took another Rookie win, while Felbermayr led the Women’s Trophy runners. Burnett set the fastest lap from 12th overall. Killion received two separate five-second penalties for track-limit abuse and finished 30th.

2026 Italian F4: Imola: Final: Sammalisto responds with ninth victory

Sammalisto earned pole for the Final after the preliminary races and made a clean getaway, while Craigie retained second despite an immediate challenge from Robinson into Tamburello. A multi-car incident further back brought out an early Safety Car, but the leading trio retained their positions when racing resumed.

Sammalisto controlled the restart and gradually established a small advantage, while Craigie balanced his attempt to remain close with the need to defend from Robinson. Bearman occupied fourth ahead of Bansal and Ruta, while Costoya required a pit stop for a damaged front wing.

A second Safety Car followed after Anagnostidis went off at Villeneuve. Officials restarted the race with fewer than 20 seconds remaining, creating a final-lap sprint. Sammalisto stayed ahead, Craigie successfully defended second from Robinson and Ruta passed Bansal to take fifth in the official classification behind Bearman.

The win became Sammalisto’s ninth of the season and his second of the weekend. Craigie completed another Rookie victory, while Felbermayr again topped the Women’s Trophy. Costoya received a 10-second penalty and fell to 29th.

Sammalisto extends Italian F4 championship lead

Sammalisto added 86 points across his three Imola races. Victory in Race 2, second behind Craigie in Race 3 and another win in the Final moved him from 288 to 374 points and increased his advantage from 55 to 99.

Cosma-Cristofor remains second on 275 after collecting 42 points, while Bansal moves to third on 254. Aksoy falls from third to fourth on 244, with Craigie’s 82-point weekend taking him from 144 to 226 and fifth overall.

Robinson also made substantial progress, climbing to sixth with 214 after collecting 74 points. Bearman follows on 189, while Savinkov and Maccagnani remain closely matched on 179 and 178 respectively.

Craigie takes Rookie Championship lead

Aksoy arrived at Imola 25 points ahead of Craigie in the Rookie Trophy, but the R-ACE GP driver transformed the championship picture with three class victories. Craigie collected 90 Rookie points from his three races and moved from 260 to 350, while Aksoy reached 335. The gap therefore swings to 15 points in Craigie’s favour.

Repetto remains third on 246, only three points ahead of Nielsen. Costoya sits another point back on 242, with Hattemer, Simek and Arn also remaining firmly inside the leading group.

Toniolo’s Race 2 Rookie victory helped him increase his total to 184, while strong Imola performances also moved Ruykov, Kamyab, Pedersen, Coronel and Burnett further up the classification.

Felbermayr extends Women’s Trophy advantage

Panzeri denied Felbermayr a clean sweep by winning the Women’s Trophy classification in Race 1, but the PHM Racing driver responded with class victories in Race 2, Race 3 and the Final.

Those three wins move Felbermayr from 230 to 320 points. Westcott scored consistently across her three appearances and climbs from 216 to 294, leaving 26 points between the leading pair.

Panzeri’s strong weekend moves her ahead of the absent Cotty and into third on 220. Cotty remains on 216, while Ferreira increases her total to 160.

US Racing extends Teams’ Championship lead

US Racing enjoyed another high-scoring weekend through Sammalisto, Robinson and Bansal. The German team won three of the four races and increases its total from 750 to 952 points.

PREMA Racing remains second but could not match its rival’s Imola haul. The Italian team moves from 656 to 766, leaving US Racing with a 186-point advantage.

Craigie’s exceptional weekend helps R-ACE GP climb from fourth to third on 350, moving ahead of Van Amersfoort Racing despite the latter also enjoying a strong round through Bearman and Ruta. Jenzer Motorsport follows on 250, with Trident Motorsport sixth on 222.

Penalty summary

Race 1 produced the largest collection of post-race sanctions. Pedersen received a five-second penalty, while Borenstein, Arn, Martinese, Westcott, Ferreira, Nielsen, Simek, Walther and Orsini each received 25-second penalties. The sanctions significantly reshaped the lower half of the final classification.

Busso was disqualified from Race 2 under Stewards’ Decision No. 21 after initially completing all 15 laps. In Race 3, officials handed Killion two separate five-second penalties for track-limit abuse, producing a combined 10 seconds and leaving him 30th in the final classification.

Costoya received the main sanction in the Final, with officials adding 10 seconds to his race time. The penalty dropped the PREMA Rookie to 29th overall. The Final had initially carried a sub judice notation, but the subsequent technical checks found the inspected cars compliant and the classification became final.

Conclusion: Sammalisto takes control as Craigie strengthens challenge

Imola further consolidated Sammalisto’s position at the top of the Italian F4 standings. After his six-race winning streak ended at Mugello, the Finn responded with pole position, two victories and a runner-up finish, increasing his championship advantage from 55 to 99 points.

Craigie nevertheless continued to establish himself as one of the strongest drivers in the second half of the season. His Race 3 victory followed his Mugello Final success, while two further second places produced an 82-point overall haul and allowed him to take control of the Rookie Trophy.

Robinson also delivered an important weekend for US Racing through victory and two additional podiums, while Ruta claimed his maiden Italian F4 podium in Race 2. Bearman finished inside the top four in all three of his races, and Bansal remained third in the overall championship after another consistent points haul.

The title fights therefore leave Imola moving in different directions. Sammalisto now carries a substantial 99-point overall advantage, while the Rookie contest has tightened considerably after Craigie overturned Aksoy’s 25-point lead to establish a 15-point advantage of his own. Felbermayr leads Westcott by 26 in the Women’s Trophy, while US Racing holds a 186-point Teams’ Championship advantage over PREMA.

Italian F4 returns at Misano from 18–20 September for the sixth and penultimate round of the 2026 season. Sammalisto will arrive with his first opportunity to move towards mathematically securing the championship, while Craigie and Aksoy continue a much closer fight for Rookie honours.
