McLaren Racing has confirmed Alex Lynn as the latest addition to its Hypercar driver line-up for the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), strengthening the British manufacturer’s preparations for its return to top-level endurance racing.

The 33-year-old will join Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor in the McLaren Hypercar Team after completing his current campaign with Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA. Lynn brings extensive experience across several endurance racing categories, including victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the WEC’s Hypercar class.

His signing follows confirmation of his departure from Cadillac at the end of 2026, bringing an end to an association that has included several major achievements. McLaren will now benefit from his experience as it prepares to introduce the new MCL-HY prototype and challenge for overall victories from 2027.

Lynn joins McLaren as manufacturer strengthens Hypercar line-up

Lynn’s arrival represents another significant addition to McLaren’s growing endurance racing programme, which will make its competitive debut in the Hypercar category next season.

The British driver has established himself among the leading competitors in international sportscar racing, combining outright pace with extensive experience developing and racing prototype machinery.

He will join Jensen and Vanthoor, giving McLaren another accomplished driver with knowledge of the WEC’s highest category. His previous experience working with established manufacturers should also prove valuable as the team prepares to introduce its new prototype.

Lynn expressed his enthusiasm about representing the British manufacturer, while acknowledging the challenges involved in building a competitive Hypercar programme.

“As a British driver is there any bigger honour than being a McLaren Racing driver? I don’t think so. It’s a team name that I am incredibly proud to wear on my chest and I take great pride and responsibility in representing. I don’t underestimate the challenge ahead – I know from experience that WEC and Le Mans are incredibly tough to win and are more competitive today than ever before – but I can already see that Zak [Brown], James [Barclay] and the McLaren Hypercar Team are laying the foundations of a what could be a championship-winning team. I couldn’t be more driven towards winning a world title and taking victory at Le Mans for the most iconic racing brand in the world.”

Successful single-seater career precedes endurance racing achievements

Before establishing himself in endurance racing, Lynn enjoyed a successful single-seater career that included championship victories and experience within Formula 1.

The British driver claimed victory at the prestigious Macau Grand Prix in 2013 before securing the GP3 Series title in 2014. His performances subsequently opened opportunities at higher levels of international motorsport, including Formula 1 test and development roles.

Lynn also competed in the FIA Formula E World Championship, where he demonstrated his competitiveness in electric single-seater racing and secured a race victory.

However, his transition into endurance competition ultimately provided the foundation for many of his most significant achievements.

Lynn won the 12 Hours of Sebring in both 2017 and 2022, demonstrating his ability to compete successfully in North American prototype racing. He also secured the 2023 European Le Mans Series LMP2 Championship with Algarve Pro Racing, sharing the title-winning Oreca with James Allen and Kyffin Simpson.

These achievements helped establish Lynn as a versatile driver capable of adapting to different machinery and competitive environments.

Le Mans success strengthens Lynn’s credentials

Lynn also brings considerable experience of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the principal targets of McLaren’s new Hypercar programme.

In 2020, he claimed victory in the LMGTE Pro category with Aston Martin Racing, sharing the #97 Vantage with Maxime Martin and Harry Tincknell.

The trio secured class honours after a competitive battle with Ferrari, adding an important achievement to Lynn’s endurance racing career.

He subsequently progressed into the Hypercar category with Cadillac, developing his experience in top-level prototype machinery.

One of his standout performances came during Qualifying for the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he secured outright pole position with an exceptional lap around the Circuit de la Sarthe.

The achievement demonstrated Lynn’s single-lap speed against some of the strongest drivers and manufacturers in international endurance racing.

His combination of race victories, championship success and qualifying performances makes him an important addition to McLaren as the team prepares to challenge for overall honours at Le Mans.

Lynn prepares to conclude Cadillac partnership after successful spell

Lynn will join McLaren following the conclusion of his current programme with Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA, ending his involvement with the American manufacturer’s Hypercar operations.

The British driver has competed in Cadillac machinery since 2023, contributing to several of the manufacturer’s most significant achievements in the WEC.

Among those milestones was Cadillac’s breakthrough victory at Interlagos in 2025, when Lynn shared the #12 V-Series.R with Will Stevens and Norman Nato.

The trio secured the manufacturer’s first overall WEC victory, demonstrating the progress Cadillac had made against its established Hypercar rivals.

Lynn also played a role in Cadillac’s first overall podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and secured four WEC pole positions during his time with the manufacturer.

However, his 2026 campaign has been disrupted by a neck injury that required surgery, forcing him to miss the opening six rounds.

He will make his return to WEC competition at Barcelona this weekend before completing his Cadillac programme at the season finale in Monza.

McLaren builds experienced driver line-up for 2027

McLaren has continued strengthening its driver roster throughout 2026 as preparations for the new Hypercar programme gather momentum.

Jensen became the first driver confirmed for the project, joining the manufacturer following several seasons competing with Peugeot in the WEC’s Hypercar category.

The Dane brings extensive international prototype racing experience, having previously competed in LMP2 and GT competition before progressing to the highest level with Peugeot.

McLaren subsequently confirmed Laurens Vanthoor as its next Hypercar recruit, adding a former World Champion to the line-up.

Vanthoor secured the 2024 FIA WEC Drivers’ Championship with Porsche, establishing himself among the leading competitors of the modern Hypercar era.

Lynn’s arrival adds another experienced race winner to the programme, giving McLaren a strong foundation as it prepares for its debut.

Although the manufacturer has not yet finalised every driver combination for its two cars, the confirmed line-up offers a blend of championship experience, prototype development knowledge and proven endurance racing performance.

Barclay welcomes Lynn’s experience and technical knowledge

McLaren Hypercar Team Principal James Barclay believes Lynn’s experience will provide an important advantage as the manufacturer continues developing its programme.

The British driver’s familiarity with the WEC, particularly through his recent work with Cadillac, will allow him to contribute knowledge gained from competing against established Hypercar manufacturers.

Barclay welcomed the signing, highlighting Lynn’s technical understanding and performances in major endurance events.

“We are delighted to welcome Alex to the McLaren Hypercar Team. He is a proven winner with extensive experience at the highest level of endurance racing, and his speed, technical understanding and knowledge of the FIA World Endurance Championship will be a real asset to our programme. Alex has consistently demonstrated his ability on the biggest stages, including at Le Mans, and his signing adds further strength and depth to an already exciting driver line-up as we prepare for our return to the pinnacle of sports car racing.”

The addition also reflects McLaren’s emphasis on recruiting drivers who can contribute beyond race weekends. With the MCL-HY still undergoing development, feedback from experienced Hypercar competitors will play an important role in preparing the car for its first season.

MCL-HY development continues ahead of 2027 WEC debut

McLaren’s new Hypercar programme has already entered an extensive testing phase ahead of its competitive debut in 2027.

The manufacturer will compete with the MCL-HY, an LMDh-based prototype developed in partnership with United Autosports and chassis manufacturer Dallara. The car features a McLaren-developed twin-turbocharged V6 engine supported by a hybrid system.

The programme began its first on-track running at Varano in May, before progressing through further development tests at circuits including Imola, Aragón and Silverstone.

McLaren recently completed its first 30-hour endurance test with the MCL-HY, marking another significant milestone in its preparations.

The extended running allowed the team to assess the car’s reliability while developing procedures for longer races, including driver changes, pit stops and overnight operations.

Lynn’s arrival will provide another source of technical experience as McLaren continues refining the prototype. Having worked with Cadillac’s V-Series.R throughout its Hypercar development, the British driver understands the challenges involved in establishing a competitive programme.

McLaren targets return to Le Mans glory

McLaren’s arrival in the WEC Hypercar category will mark its return to the highest level of international endurance racing for the first time in nearly three decades.

The British manufacturer famously won the 24 Hours of Le Mans on its debut in 1995, when JJ Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya drove the McLaren F1 GTR to overall victory.

The achievement remains one of the most significant moments in McLaren’s motorsport history, with the manufacturer now preparing to pursue another overall victory through its factory Hypercar programme.

The MCL-HY project represents McLaren’s return to that ambition, combining modern prototype technology with the manufacturer’s extensive racing experience across Formula 1, IndyCar and sportscar competition.

However, McLaren will face strong competition from established manufacturers, including Ferrari, Toyota, BMW, Cadillac and Aston Martin, alongside other new entrants.

The signing of Lynn therefore represents another important step in building a team capable of challenging at the highest level.

With Jensen, Vanthoor and Lynn bringing extensive endurance racing experience, McLaren will continue preparing for its 2027 debut as it targets victories and ultimately the FIA WEC title and another overall triumph at Le Mans.
