Hitech’s Ava Dobson has received a three-place grid penalty for all three races of the 2026 F1 Academy United States Grand Prix weekend at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), following a yellow flag infringement during Thursday’s Free Practice session.

The 18-year-old American Express-backed driver was found to have failed to slow sufficiently under a single yellow flag at Turn 19, where another competitor had spun off at the corner exit. Although Dobson explained that she had attempted to lift the throttle after noticing the warning, the stewards determined that the available evidence did not demonstrate a meaningful reduction in speed.

As a result, Dobson will start Friday’s Opening Race from 17th, Saturday’s Reverse Grid Race from 18th and Sunday’s Feature Race from 18th. The penalties represent a significant setback for the American driver as she prepares to compete on home soil during the penultimate round of the championship.

Stewards investigate Dobson’s yellow flag infringement

The incident occurred during Thursday’s Free Practice session, as the F1 Academy field prepared for the expanded three-race weekend at COTA.

Dobson approached Turn 19 while a single yellow flag was being displayed in marshal sector 19. The warning had been activated after another car spun off at the exit of the corner, creating a potential hazard for approaching competitors.

According to the stewards’ findings, Dobson had already committed to the corner when she encountered the yellow flag. During the subsequent investigation, the Hitech driver explained that she had attempted to respond by lifting the throttle.

However, the stewards examined the available data and determined that her response was insufficient to satisfy the requirements for slowing under yellow flag conditions.

Although the data showed a brief reduction in throttle application midway through the corner, the stewards found no noticeable reduction in speed either approaching or travelling through the affected sector.

The distinction proved decisive. While Dobson had attempted to adjust her throttle input, the data did not demonstrate the reduction in speed required when yellow flags are displayed.

After hearing representations from Dobson and Hitech, the stewards concluded that the American had failed to respect the warning and imposed the standard three-place grid penalty.

Dobson receives penalties across all three Austin races

The consequences extend beyond a single starting position because of the expanded three-race format introduced for Austin and Montreal in 2026.

Unlike the championship’s traditional two-race events, the United States Grand Prix weekend features an additional Opening Race, alongside the Reverse Grid Race and Feature Race.

The Opening Race grid is determined by each driver’s second-fastest qualifying lap, while their fastest lap determines the Feature Race starting order. The Reverse Grid Race follows the usual format, with the leading eight qualifiers reversed.

Despite the different grid-setting procedures, Dobson’s penalty applies separately to all three contests.

Her revised starting positions are:

  • Opening Race, Friday 23 October: P17
  • Reverse Grid Race, Saturday 24 October: P18
  • Feature Race, Sunday 25 October: P18

The penalties leave Dobson towards the rear of the 18-car field throughout the weekend, substantially increasing the challenge of recovering into points-scoring positions.

Austin’s additional race provides another opportunity to accumulate championship points, but starting near the back in every contest means Dobson will need to make significant progress through the field to improve her results.

Difficult setback during home F1 Academy weekend

The penalty comes at an important stage of Dobson’s first full F1 Academy campaign, with the championship approaching its conclusion.

The American joined the full-time grid in 2026 following her Wild Card appearance at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, continuing her partnership with Hitech while receiving backing from American Express.

Her season has included several encouraging performances, although converting competitive pace into consistent points finishes has proved challenging.

Dobson opened her points account during the Feature Race in Shanghai before enduring a difficult Montreal weekend, where contact and a puncture disrupted her progress.

She subsequently delivered her strongest qualifying performance of the season at Silverstone, securing fourth on the grid before scoring points in both races. Those results demonstrated her potential to challenge nearer the front when starting positions and race circumstances worked in her favour.

Her first-half campaign nevertheless highlighted the importance of qualifying and avoiding incidents, particularly given the closely matched nature of the championship field.

Austin presents another opportunity to build on that experience, but the three grid penalties create an additional obstacle during an important home event.

Austin offers three opportunities for recovery

Dobson will now face the challenge of recovering through the field during each of the three races at COTA.

The Free Practice session was topped by Emma Felbermayr, who finished ahead of championship leader Alisha Palmowski as the leading contenders prepared for another important weekend.

Meanwhile, the qualifying session saw Palmowski secure pole position for both the Opening Race and Feature Race, reinforcing the competitive challenge facing drivers starting further down the order.

For Dobson, the immediate priority will be to make progress from 17th in the Opening Race before attempting further recovery drives on Saturday and Sunday.

The three-race format provides additional competitive mileage compared with a conventional weekend, although her revised positions leave limited room for error. A strong start and opportunities to overtake could prove particularly important, with the penalties removing the benefit of any stronger original qualifying positions.

With Las Vegas set to host the final round of the 2026 season, Austin represents one of Dobson’s remaining opportunities to strengthen her championship position.

However, following the stewards’ decision, the Hitech driver faces a considerably more difficult task as she attempts to recover from the back of the field during her home Grand Prix weekend.
