From the get-go, the 2026 F1 Barcelona-Catalunya GP promised to be an interesting one, with pole sitter George Russell starting one compound harder than Lewis Hamilton in P2. Add to that a two-stop strategy and lots of tyre degradation, and multiple scenarios could unfold. At the back, hometown hero Fernando Alonso opted to start from pit lane with some setup changes.

Leclerc on the move

The better start was for Russell, with him easily keeping first place. Behind them Max Verstappen batles with the McLarens for fourth, but stays in fifth.

Isack Hadjar lost nine places at the start, but managed to overtake Ollie Bearman towards the end of the lap, followed by Esteban Ocon doing the same into turn 1.

At the start of lap 3 Hadjar overtakes Carlos Sainz around the outside of turn 3, as Nico Hülkenberg is under inverstigation for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

Russell seems to have the early advantage, as he slowly but steadily creates a gap to Hamilton, who has his mirrors full of Kimi Antonelli.

The schlemiel of yesterday’s qualifying session, Charles Leclerc, had a great start, and is now on the gearbox of Oscar Piastri. At the end of the straight however, ‘on the gearbox’ almost changes into ‘in the gearbox’, as Piastri brakes harder than Leclerc anticipated.

First retirement of the day is Lance Stroll, who is wheeled into the garage in lap six already.

Hadjar repeats his around-the-outside overtakes with both Alpines, and inspires Leclerc by doing so. The Ferrari driver does the same against Piastri around turn 3, claiming sixth.

Hamilton triggers early pitstop sequence

Arvid Lindblad is the first to deny Hadjar from overtaking him, albeit for only a moment. This brings the second Red Bull Racing driver back into the points.

The first Red Bull Racing driver, Verstappen, is struggling with the soft tyres. Leclerc coming ever closes is sdfae

Hamilton is the first to decide to get rid of the softs. Liam Lawson also stops, but his servicing is less than ideal and the young Kiwi loses a lot of time.

Russell thinks Hamilton is going for a three-stop strategy, and immediately pits the next lap, together with Verstappen.

Norris covers Verstappen the next time around, triggering the rest of the drivers ahead to stop as well, except Leclerc. With the gaps now smaller, it is clear that the undercut is powerful.

Both Williams drivers are under investigation for a starting procedure infringement, as Bottas is retiring.

At the edge of the points Hadjar keeps making overtakes left and right, for example into the very quick turn 13. There clearly is pace in the RB22, and to underline that, he overtakes Lindblad again into turn 1.

Aggressive strategy puts Hamilton in charge

In lap 23 it is Lindblad the last of the drivers to stop, going completely out-of-sync with the rest of the field. Team mate Lawson is fighting with Hülkenberg, and Pierre Gasly is also joining the battle. Hülkenberg however wasn’t to happy with Lawson’s defending.

Audi team mate Gabriel Bortoleto fairs better against Ocon, as he overtakes the Frenchman into turn 1. Lindblad does the same a lap later.

Starting lap 28, Hamilton again opens the pit stop dance. The medium tyres mean he is comitted to a three-stop strategy now. He wastes no time and goes 1.6 seconds quicker in his out lap than Russell. Piastri also is not much of an issue, as Hamilton goes around the outside of him in turn 3.

As Antonelli gets a black-white flag for track limits, Verstappen follows Hamilton’s example. His stop is sub-optimal however, as his left front wasn’t coming off as it should. Antonelli’s pushing has brought him into striking distance of team mate Russell, who struggles with the backmarkers.

In the meantime Hamilton is let by by team mate Leclerc, as he is eating into Russell’s advantage. An advantage which is being hampered by Antonelli attacking him strongly into turn 1. The Briton manages to keep his team mate behind, but it is far from smooth sailing for him.

Championship leader Antonelli is being told he cannot push to hard, as they need to keep the gap to Norris constant. The world champion however decides to pit, so behind the leading Mercedes duo it is Hamilton who is eating away in their lead.

Norris’ stop however forces Russell to cover, meaning Antonelli can briefly lead the race. He does however needs to do the same, meaning he stops a lap later. He gets out just ahead of Norris and manages to keep the place.

Fortune favours the brave as Hamilton capitalises on VSC in 2026 F1 Barcelona-Catalunya GP

As Leclerc is about to box he is overtaken by Russell, who cannot afford to lose any time. As the Ferrari driver gets out of the pits Alonso stops on track, meaning the Virtual Safety Car is out. Hamilton however has just past the pit entry. Verstappen capitalises on this opportunity as he stops and jumps ahead of Leclerc.

Hamilton manages to pit just before the VSC ends, putting him in the lead with fresher tyres than Russell. However, the race direction notes a possible yellow flag infringement for Hamilton. The seven-time champion however is unfazed an puts down the fastest lap. Franco Colapinto is also noted for a similar infringement, but for the moment nothing is under investigation.

With 17 laps to go race direction announces there is no further investigation towards Hamilton, meaning the 6,5 second gap he built is his true advantage over Russell. Who still isn’t really clear of team mate Antonelli and Norris.

In the backfield Beaman is overtaking Bortoleto for 14th, and missed in all the chaos for the lead: Alex Albon is eight laps down due to a loose camera. The team then decided to make is record-breaking Williams race a glorified testing session.

Reliability gremlins for Antonelli and Leclerc

McLaren is confident Antonelli has gone over track limits too often, telling Norris he will receive a five-second time penalty. The fight for second however hasn’t backed down, as there is just over two seconds between Russell and Norris, with Antonelli inbetween.

With 10 laps left in Montmeló, Hamilton has a 12,5 second advantage over Russell, who still has to worry about Antonelli. Norris seems to back off a little, while Verstappen somehow has found some pace in his medium tyres, increasing the gap to Leclerc behind.

Sainz overtakes Ocon for P15, as Hadjar comes in for a late stop switching to the soft tyres.

With 5 laps to go Antonelli decides he wants more and attacks Russell into turn 1. The battle continues into turn 4, but unlike 10 years ago, both Mercedes drivers stay on the black stuff.

One lap later however Antonelli’s Mercedes breaks down, forcing another VSC. At virtually the same time Leclerc’s power steering failed, putting an end to his race as well. This propels both Racing Bulls into the points, and puts some life back into the championship.

As the VSC is back in its virtual pitbox, it is Sir Lewis Hamilton who wins the 2026 F1 Barcelona-Catalunya GP! Russell finishes second ahead of compatriot Norris, making it the first all-British podium since 1968. Verstappen finishes fourth from Piasti, Hadjar and Gasly. Colapinto, Lawson and Lindblad complete the top 10 of a historic race in Spain.
