Round 10 of the 2025 F1 season is well underway as FP3 has taken place at the Canadian GP ahead of qualifying later, view the full report and results below.
Max Verstappen and George Russell went fastest in the Friday session, but who would be P1 at the end of final practice?
Charles Leclerc was forced to play catch-up after his FP1 accident left damage that couldn’t be repaired in time for FP2. McLaren split their setup approach with Lando Norris keeping the new front suspension from Friday. Oscar Piastri opted against running it. The team endured a difficult Friday, describing it as one of their worst in terms of putting together clean laps.
Early running in FP3 at the F1 Canadian GP
FP3 got off to a slow start with no teams rushing out on track. Franco Colapinto was among the first to venture out, getting the session underway a couple of minutes after the green light. The Argentine driver set the first fast lap of the session with a 1:34.233. The drivers behind him quickly improved on his benchmark.
Halfway point in FP3 at the F1 Canadian GP
Oscar Piastri clipped the Wall of Champions 20 minutes into FP3, triggering a brief yellow flag. Moments later, Nico Hülkenberg spun at the final corner. Quick reflexes from the German kept his Sauber out of the wall.
The session was then red flagged due to debris on track from Piastri’s hit. He suffered a rear puncture and possible suspension damage. Carbon fiber was left on track as he crawled back to the pits. Luckily for him, he could return to the circuit.
The session resumed with 32 minutes left, with cars lined up and ready to go. Charles Leclerc topped the times with a 1:15.811 on the medium tire.
There was a moment for Alex Albon at turn 8, going onto the grass. Oliver Bearman, the Haas rookie, also clipped the Wall of Champions. No damage was done to his car.
Lewis Hamilton topped the times briefly on the medium tire with a 1:12.79. His former teammate George Russell then took over with a 1:11.950 on softs.
Hadjar had a spin at Turn 2 but was able to get his VCARB facing the right way.
Last 15 minutes of FP3 at the F1 Canadian GP
Yuki Tsunoda had only run the mediums so far in the session. He stayed in the garage until five minutes remaining due to brake issues. The Japanese driver completed just seven laps prior.
Oliver Bearman had another contact with the Wall of Champions. He radioed that the car was fine.
Max Verstappen attempted a fast lap but remained fourth despite three personal best sectors. George Russell also failed to improve on fresh softs, remaining in P2.
Lando Norris claimed the session lead with a 1:11.799 on the soft compound tires. The McLaren driver will welcome this result after describing Friday as difficult.
Charles Leclerc made a late surge to P2 with a 1:11.877. He radioed that there was still more pace to find in the Ferrari as he did not do a perfect lap.
Qualifying should be exciting. Mercedes stayed competitive, along with McLaren despite yesterday’s setbacks and Piastri’s minimal damage. Ferrari look strong with Leclerc fast over one lap despite his lack of practice, and Hamilton knows the circuit well. And, as always, Max Verstappen can never be counted out.
The battle for pole position looks very close.
