Who will take the first FE Pole position in Qualifying for the Monaco E-Prix of the 2024-2025 season?
Group A
First set of cars on track will include the Andretti, Nissan, Penske drivers as well as De Vries, Bird, Wehrlein, Buemi and Maloney.
After the first set of attempts, both Nissans were steadily through as well as De Vries and Bird. the McLaren driver then clipped the wall in the tunnel.
Wehrlein then set a 1:29.337s which put him on top of the charts, but was then improved by Rowland’s Nissan challenger again.
Times get lower and lower, as De Vries, Günther and Dennis all slot in between the reigning champion and the championship leader.
In the final heated moments of the session, Rowland’s earlier 1:28.713s remains unbeaten, but Dennis manages to ge through only 0.067s off the Brit’s time. De Vries, who has been fast all day so far, and Wehrlein advance as well.
Group B
The remaining drivers get on track as fast as their predecessors. Di Grassi, Mortara, Evans and Barnard would advance to the Duels after their first set of attempts. Evans improves to a 1:41 which is good enough for P2
At the halfway point in the session, Di Grassi is still the leader in 1:29.731, with Mortara, Ticktum and Evans far behind.
Barnard is then the next driver to cycle at the top in 1:29.015s, improving the previous best benchmarks of Frijns, Evans and Da Costa.
However, the situation completely changed with the final sets of laps. In fact, Ticktum led Group B FE Qualifying in Monaco in 1:28.661s after leading FP1 and FP2, and advances with Evans, Barnard and Frijns.
Surprisingly, Porsche’s Da Costa will have to fight his way up from the back of the grid.
Quarter finals
De Vries and Dennis will face in the first Duel of the day. The former FE champions gallantly sparred, but in the end it was the Mahindra driver who prevailed by 0.214s.
The next Duel will feature current champion Wehrlein and championship leader Rowland. The Nissan driver began with a consistent 0.237s advantage, which grew to 0.330s in the middle sector. In the final corners Wehrlein tried to make up for it, but ultimately Rowland advances.
Evans and Barnard are on next. The Jaguar driver began with a 0.089s lead on the younger Brit, who then managed to close the gap and be slightly ahead. It was an incredibly close round, but Barnard prevailed.
Ticktum and Frijns round off the day. The Kiro driver began with a good gap over the Dutchman, who closed the gap and improved the benchmark. Ultimately it was a close call but Ticktum advances.
Semi Finals
De Vries and Rowland contend for the first Front Row spot. The Nissan driver was consistently in the lead from the beginning to the end of the lap.
Barnard and Ticktum’s Semi Final was much more undecided. The Kiro driver began leading the rookie, but the McLaren improved and overtook him in the second sector. Ultimately Barnard moves on with a 0.171s margin.
Final
Barnard was strongly in the lead from the first corner of the track because the championship leader hit the wall at the exit of Saint Devote.
The rookie driver takes pole position one year after his FE debut ahead of the championship leader and Ticktum.
