Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri delivered a McLaren 1-2 in Friday’s opening practice at Zandvoort, with the Aston Martin pair of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso completing the top four as teams prepared for a weather-threatened FP2 session.

Ahead of FP2 at the F1 Dutch GP

The weather turned unpredictable before the session began as rain and strong winds swept through Zandvoort before clearing. With more rain on the radar, most teams planned to head out early to take advantage of the dry track. Notably, Max Verstappen’s car was fully repaired after he beached it at the end of FP1. Kimi Antonelli was also set to rejoin the action after missing nearly the entire first session following his off into the gravel.

Early running in FP2 at the F1 Dutch GP

FP2 began with Racing Bull driver Liam Lawson leading the charge under a brief virtual safety car. He set the initial benchmark at 1:17.854, but every driver who followed managed to improve on his time.

The rain, originally forecast for late in the session, arrived just four minutes after the green flag. Teams were already predicting heavy precipitation within 20 minutes.

Lando Norris topped the timesheets early with a 1:11.294, while teammate Oscar Piastri sat 1.081 seconds adrift. Oliver Bearman then claimed the fastest time with a 1:11.113 on soft compounds.

Lance Stroll crashed at turn 3 after locking up trying to take the high line into the banked corner, sending him straight into the barriers. It was a heavy impact, but he confirmed over the radio that he was fine. The red flags came out immediately with 48 minutes left on the clock. The crash proved costly for Stroll and Aston Martin, who had shown strong pace.

Halfway point in FP2 at the F1 Dutch GP

Track action resumed at the session’s midpoint but was immediately disrupted when Isack Hadjar’s Racing Bull suffered a power failure, prompting a virtual safety car deployment.

After a five-minute interruption, running continued with Lewis Hamilton providing drama at Turn 9. The seven-time world champion carried excessive speed into the corner and executed a complete 360-degree spin on fresh soft tyres.

Alex Albon’s afternoon ended prematurely when his Williams went into the gravel at Turn 1. Unlike Verstappen’s earlier off, Albon found the barriers, damaging his front wing. He beached the car on what was set to be his first push lap on soft tyres. The incident triggered another red flag.

Drama erupted in the pitlane when Oscar Piastri overshot his designated pit box and pulled into Norris’ area instead. The confusion led to contact with George Russell, with race officials noting the pitlane incident.

Last 15 minutes of FP2 at the F1 Dutch GP

Norris held the top spot on the timing sheets as the session resumed with 15 minutes remaining. The McLaren driver’s benchmark of 1:09.890 led Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri.

Kimi Antonelli had a close call when his rear wheel dipped into the gravel, though he managed to maintain control. The rookie continued pushing hard in preparation for tomorrow’s qualifying session, which was forecast to remain dry.

The promised heavy rain never materialized, with brilliant sunshine bathing the Dutch circuit instead of the forecast downpour.

McLaren’s strong form continued, though Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin managed to split the two cars. Norris topped the order ahead of Alonso in second and Piastri in third.
