The second day of the Formula E Jeddah E-Prix began with Free Practice 3. With Round 4 bringing chaos, Round 5 of Season 12 left the drivers with a slower start to the day.
The first day on the Jeddah Corniche Circuit saw several drivers on top. FP1 saw Maximilian Günther top the session, while FP2 saw Dan Ticktum on top. The first race of the weekend ended with Pascal Wehrlein storming to take the chequered flag first, making it Porsche’s first win of the season.
Green light for the final practice session
The green lights were on in the pit lane, and the 40-minute practice session began. Wehrlein was the first driver to set a flying lap with a 1:18.70. The rest of the pack were quick to follow with their own flying laps. As the Jeddah track evolved, lap times were several tenths faster than yesterday.
Unfortunately for Nyck De Vries, the issues from yesterday stuck, and the Dutchman was forced to stay in the pits. He reported technical issues once again, leaving him disappointed.
Meanwhile, Nick Cassidy was sliding over the kerbs and struggling in the turns. He was not alone, Rowland came on the radio to complain about the poor traction.
With 25 minutes left on the clock, the top three were Jake Dennis, Dan Ticktum, and António Félix da Costa.
Halfway through Formula E FP3
20 minutes had passed as the halfway point of the final practice session was reached. Drivers were still struggling with bouncing over the kerbs and sliding across the track.
Rowland kept improving, looking quick, and would hope the momentum lasts for the rest of the day. Edoardo Mortara took the top spot with a lap time of 1:15.584. This put the quickest time, several tenths quicker than yesterday’s time on track.
Both CUPRA KIRO drivers appeared to be struggling in the latter part of the Formula E FP3 session. Rookie Pepe Marti attempted to find his footing around the quick Jeddah track. However, he found himself at the lower end of the timing sheet instead.
Final flying laps
Similar to the end of FP2, most drivers headed back to the pits before coming onto the track for their final laps. The final moments saw several drivers struggling with the cars’ balance. With the Jeddah E-Prix Qualifying taking place only an hour and a half after the practice session, the teams wanted to fix the issues quickly.
One of the drivers whose day kept getting worse was De Vries. The Dutchman was set to take a 60-place grid penalty after changing three components of his car.
Meanwhile, the final seconds of the session brought chaos after a slow session. The drivers were forced to deal with traffic as almost everyone was back out on track. Through the final chicane, Jean-Eric Vergne was driving slowly on the racing line, forcing Da Costa to take avoiding action to avoid crashing into the back of him.
As the session concluded, Jake Dennis topped the timing sheets with a 1:15.22. He was followed by Evans in second and Ticktum in third.
