Round 5 of the 2025 Indy NXT season is in the books as the Detroit GP is done, view the full race report and results below. Once again, Dennis Hauger and Lochie Hughes shared the front row.
Off the start Hauger just held the way as Hughes looked around the outside, with de Alba getting very close into turn 4 as chaos went on behind. Callum Hedge tagged Myles Rowe into a spin, with Max Taylor breaking his front suspension as he was unable to avoid the spinning HMD car. Tommy Smith got airborne as he hit Jack William Miller’s rear wing. Hailie Deegan got into Nolan Allaer as well. Ricardo Escotto also damaged his left front suspension as he hit Deegan.
A red flag was thrown as the track was blocked.
The order on the restart was Hauger, Hughes, de Alba, Collet, Hedge, Correa, Pierson, Miller, Murray, Aron, Roe and Missig took the restart on the lead lap as 3 cars retired in that complete mess (Rowe, Escotto and Taylor). Hedge was given a 15-second holding penalty on pit road for his part in that crash.
On the restart, de Alba lunged down the inside of Hughes into turn 3 on lap 5, brilliantly getting it stopped and holding position on exit.
On lap 15 Hauger led de Alba, Hughes, Collet, Correa, Pierson, Miller, Murray, Aron and Roe.
Down at turn 1 Nolan Allaer took a trip down the run off.
Lap 18 saw Salvador de Alba defended aggressively against Hughes into the hairpin as the Australian touched the front wing of the Mexican. On the next lap into turn 1, he hit the wall on his at turn 1, allowing Hughes to briefly take P2, but even with a broken front wing back came the Mexican down the inside and got the pass done. Collet almost followed through but had to cede into turn 4.
Ultimately the call to pit came for de Alba as the damage became too much just after the halfway point, dropping from 2nd to 13th.
Hedge and de Alba came back through the pack, passing Koolen, Aron and Roe to move back up to P9 and P10. The Mexican cleared the Kiwi with 7 laps to go.
Hauger and co. started to lap cars such was the pace disparity between those at the front and outside the top 10.
With 8 laps to go Lochie Hughes’ front wing collapsed, a huge moment in the championship. Despite his stubborn radio calls, he had to box to change it. He rejoined in 7th.
A caution was thrown with four laps to go as Jordan Missig lost the car on the exit of turn 2 and clipped the wall with his front wing.
Hauger masterfully managed the restart to take victory number four from five races, leading home Collet and Correa. It’s a first podium Indy NXT for Correa in just his second start. Pierson was P4, with Hughes managing to pass Murray and Miller.
Miller had broken his front wing on the restart. de Alba ended up in the wall out of turn 3.
