Under very cloudy skies at Long Beach on Saturday morning, IndyCar FP2 took place ahead of qualifying later on, full report and results below.
Teams got on with things immediately with only a 45-minute session to get their cars in the right window ahead of qualifying this afternoon local time.
Down at turn 9 in the early stages, Santino Ferrucci went straight on and was forced to head down the narrow run off. Kyffin Simpson and Colton Herta were also down there in a separate incident.
A 1:08.559 from Christian Lundgaard had saw him lead Pato O’Ward seven minutes in as McLaren started strongly.
At the 10-minute mark, a 1:08.016 from Scott McLaughlin saw him lead Kirkwood, Shwartzman, Lundgaard and Foster.
In a moment of brain fade seemingly, Scott Dixon clouted the wall on the wall to turn 6 and damaged the right rear tyre in the process, as well as the toe link. The floor was damaged as well.
Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden put down a 1:07.615 to lead the way from Palou, Power, McLaughlin, Kirkwood and Dixon with 30 minutes left. Robert Shwartzman continued to impress as he ran in 8th.
Lundgaard and Siegel vaulted up the standings, moving into P2 and P3 behind Newgarden. The Dane on a 1:07.648, with Siegel doing a 1:07.701. Their teammate Pato O’Ward went up to 6th a couple of minutes later.
Santino Ferrucci returned to pit road as a stuck throttle was the complaint of the American driver.
Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist clocked a 1:07.855 to go into P5, 0.042s faster than Christian Rasmussen as the ECR driver showed strong speed.
Newgarden, Lundgaard, Siegel, Palou, Rosenqvist, Rasmussen, Power, O’Ward, McLaughlin and Foster was the top 10 with 15 minutes to go.
Into turn 1, Pato O’Ward had a big left front lock up and went straight on before recovering.
Andretti driver Kyle Kirkwood logged a 1:07.346 to go fastest for a few minutes. However, using the softer tyre, a 1:07.209 from Louis Foster put the rookie in P1.
Scott McLaughlin joined Pato O’Ward in the turn 1 lock up club and ended up down the run off as well.
On the harder tyre, Colton Herta put down a 1:07.164, but it was Nolan Siegel who ended up quickest as a 1:07.116 on softs gave the Arrow McLaren P1.
Herta, Foster, Power, Kirkwood, Newgarden, Palou, Malukas, Dixon and Lundgaard completed the top 10.
