FP2 at round 9 of the 2025 IndyCar season is in the books as final practice was run in nice conditions at Road America, view the full report and results below. Kyle Kirkwood was fastest in FP1.
A 1:48.721 from Scott McLaughlin saw the Kiwi lead the way as everyone got up to speed after the session started. He was a tenth faster than Will Power.
Out of turn 4, the New Zealander got super wide in turn 14 and so nearly lost the rear completely. Fortunately for him he did not lose the car and up in the grass or barriers.
The times quickly tumbled as a 1:45.341 from Christian Lundgaard put him over half a second clear from VeeKay. Siegel, Ferrucci and Power rounded out the top 5.
Down at turn 5, Power had a half spin as he lost the rear in the corner.
At the 10-minute mark, Lundgaard continued to lead the way, with Ferrucci and O’Ward moving up to P2 and P3 respectively. Nonetheless the Dane maintained a gap of over 0.4s to the AJ Foyt driver.
Turn 14 continued to be difficult as Kyle Kirkwood — who had just gone P2 — lost the rear mid-corner and took a brief trip through the gravel and grass.
Lundgaard, Kirkwood, Ferrucci, O’Ward, VeeKay, Rahal, Siegel, Rasmussen, Malukas and Simpson was the top 10 with 20 minutes to go. Colton Herta soon moved himself into the game as he vaulted up to 3rd, 0.004s behind Andretti stablemate Kirkwood.
Championship leader Alex Palou jumped up to 2nd with under 15 minutes as he clocked a 1:45.591 to go within 0.250s of the Dane. CGR teammate Scott Dixon moved up to 5th himself moments later, before Will Power just beat that by 0.012s.
Lundgaard, Palou, Kirkwood, Herta, Power, Dixon, Rosenqvist, Newgarden, Ferrucci and DeFrancesco was the top 10 with 10 minutes to go. Only half a second covered them all.
Sitting in P26, Scott McLaughlin pulled out a late lap to make a big leap up to 11th on pretty new tyres.
In separate incidents, Robert Shwartzman lost the car on the entry to turn 5 as he spun after locking his rears. Down at turn 7, Will Power got on a big kerb and very briefly got a bit of air.
Right at the end Power did a flying lap after that moment and went P3, just under a tenth behind Alex Palou. The top 14 drivers were all in the 1:45s, with qualifying set to be extremely competitive as usual.
Following a spin into the gravel in FP1, Alex Rossi’s dreadful practice form continued as he could only manage P25 in final practice.
