Practice 2 for round 13 of the 2025 IndyCar season is in the books at Toronto, full report and results below. Could Kyle Kirkwood continue his strong showing from first practice on Friday?

Under nice skies on Saturday morning, the 45-minute session started. New asphalt was put down before turn 3 due to a nasty and big bump that has got worse over the years.

After 5 minutes, a 1:02.763 from Kyle Kirkwood saw him lead Siegel, Simpson, Rahal and Newgarden. The top 5 were straight into the 1:02s. On his next push, Kirkwood did a 1:01.906 to go a whopping 0.9s ahead of teammate Marcus Ericsson.

Lots of lock-ups

Heading down to turn 3, Santino Ferrucci had a sizeable lock-up and took to the run-off. A couple of minutes later, he did the same at turn 8 when going deep.

After going P2 on a 1:02.092, Colton Herta had rear locking and took a trip to the turn 3 run-off. Pato O’Ward had a massive double front lock-up a few minutes later in the same area and had flat spots on his tyres.

Out front, the very impressive rookie Louis Foster clocked a 1:01.750 to go P1 in his RLL machine. Kirkwood and Palou were P2 and P3. The Spaniard continued chipping away at things and did a 1:01.887 to go 2nd.

Foster led Palou, Kirkwood, Herta, O’Ward, Malukas, Lundgaard, Dixon, McLaughlin and Armstrong after 15 minutes.

In turn 8, Will Power got a tad deep but did not make contact with the tyres. He had a hairy moment later as he almost got into the back of Devlin DeFrancesco before turn 5. The Canadian was backing up looking for space, although he was not fully on the racing line whilst doing so.

As drivers switched to a set of a new hard tyres, the times fell. Alex Rossi logged a 1:01.571, leading Marcus Ericsson by half a tenth halfway through the session.

CGR’s Kyffin Simpson did a 1:01.301 to go P1 with 20 minutes left, less than a tenth off Kirkwood’s benchmark from yesterday.

Andretti flex their muscles

Following his switch to a new set, Kyle Kirkwood put down an eye opening lap as he smashed in a 1:00.367 to put him almost a second clear of Simpson. Will Power (1:00.734) and Alex Palou (1:00.750) went P2 and P3 but could not touch the Andretti at that stage.

Kirkwood’s teammate Colton Herta then jumped to P2, clocking a 1:00.673. Nonetheless, he was still 0.3s away. On the next attempt, the #26 got within a hundreth of his stablemate.

Behind them, McLaughlin, Power, O’Ward, Palou, Lundgaard, Newgarden, Rahal and VeeKay was the top 10 with 10 minutes to go.

The Andretti show continued as a 1:00.057 from defending race winner Colton Herta put him 0.3s clear of the #27. Meanwhile Josef Newgarden moved up to P3 as Team Penske filled the remaining top 5 spots. However he was a full half a second off Herta.

Into the closing minutes and Scott Dixon replaced Power in P5 by 0.005s. Pato O’Ward joined the party in this fight as he pipped the Kiwi by 0.03 with under 2 minutes left.

At the front, Kirkwood made a late improvement to close the gap to a tenth to teammate Herta. The pacesetter had a tap of the wall in turn 11 but got away with it.

A dramatic end to practice 2 at IndyCar Toronto

It all happened at the end. After Nolan Siegel went down the turn 3 run-off following a lock-up, Jacob Abel crashed. A broken left rear toe link picked up earlier in the lap saw him lose the car through turn 7 and find the concrete well. Luckily it was at low speed with a small bit of damage also done to the right rear.
