The FIA Formula 2 Championship has unveiled its 2027 calendar, with Istanbul and Mexico City joining a 14-round schedule that stretches across Asia, Oceania, Europe and the Americas.
The championship will begin in Sakhir from 12-14 March before concluding at Yas Island from 10-12 December. Montreal also retains its place following its unexpected introduction during the 2026 campaign, while the additions of Istanbul and Mexico City create a more evenly distributed second half of the season.
Rather than facing an extended break between the European events and the traditional closing rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, teams will now race at Istanbul and Mexico City during October. The revised structure creates a busier run towards the conclusion of the championship while also increasing Formula 2’s presence across four continents.

Bahrain and Jeddah form opening double-header
Formula 2 will begin the 2027 season at the Bahrain International Circuit, with Sakhir hosting the opening round from 12-14 March alongside Formula 1. The field will then travel directly to Saudi Arabia for the second round at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit from 19-21 March, creating the first back-to-back sequence of the campaign.
Melbourne follows from 2-4 April as Formula 2 heads to Australia for Round 3. The championship will then have more than a month before making its return to North America, where Montreal hosts the fourth round from 20-23 May.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem believes the expanded calendar continues to strengthen Formula 2’s position within the international driver development pathway, while giving young drivers experience across an increasingly varied range of circuits.
“The 2027 FIA Formula 2 Championship calendar reflects the continued strength and global growth of an important championship at the heart of our driver development pathway. The addition of Istanbul and Mexico City will bring Formula 2 to new audiences and give the next generation of talent the opportunity to compete on an even greater variety of circuits around the world. Alongside the return to Montreal, these additions further strengthen a truly international calendar across four continents.”
He added: “I look forward to another exciting season and to seeing the stars of the future continue their journey towards the highest levels of our sport.”
Montreal returns in 2027 after 2026 addition for Formula 2 calendar
Montreal will return for a second season after joining the Formula 2 calendar unexpectedly in 2026. The Canadian round became part of the schedule after changes to the original campaign resulted in Miami and Montreal replacing the cancelled Middle Eastern events.
The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve subsequently provided the Formula 2 field with a completely new challenge. Noel León took victory during the chaotic inaugural Montreal Sprint Race, while the weekend demonstrated the potential for the Canadian venue to become a regular part of the championship.
Its return also means Formula 2 will again race in North America before making a second trip to the continent later in the year. Montreal remains subject to contract, but its inclusion alongside Mexico City gives the 2027 calendar a considerably stronger presence in the region.
Monaco begins European portion of the 2027 Formula 2 season
After Montreal, Formula 2 will begin its European run with Monaco from 3-6 June. Monte-Carlo remains one of the championship’s most demanding weekends, with its narrow layout and limited overtaking opportunities placing additional importance on qualifying and track position.
The championship will then move into a July double-header. Silverstone hosts Round 6 from 2-4 July before Spielberg follows one week later from 9-11 July. Those two rounds will complete the first half of the campaign before teams and drivers enter the summer break.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali emphasised the role that Formula 2 continues to play as the final step in the traditional pathway towards Formula 1.
“The 2027 FIA Formula 2 calendar will deliver another exciting season of racing across 14 rounds at some of the most iconic and challenging venues in world motorsport, including the addition of Istanbul and Mexico City.”
He continued: “Formula 2 continues to play a vital role as the ultimate pathway to Formula 1, giving the most promising young drivers the opportunity to compete on the same stage as the pinnacle of our sport and showcase their talent to fans, teams and partners around the world.”
Three-round September stretch begins at Monza
Formula 2 will resume after the summer break with its busiest stretch of the campaign. Monza hosts Round 8 from 3-5 September before Madrid follows immediately from 10-12 September. The field will then have a short break before heading to Baku from 24-26 September.
Madrid returns after making its Formula 2 debut in 2026 and once again occupies an important position late in the campaign. The inaugural event had major championship implications, with the Madrid Feature Race leaving Nikola Tsolov seven points clear of Rafael Câmara as the title battle intensified.
Baku will then complete the three-round September sequence. The Azerbaijan event also played a significant role in the previous championship fight, with the standings changing again after the Baku Feature Race as the season entered its closing stages.
The arrangement gives the 2027 field three very different circuits in the space of four weeks, moving from Monza’s high-speed layout to Madrid and then the unforgiving Baku City Circuit.
Istanbul makes Formula 2 debut
Formula 2 will travel directly from Baku to Istanbul Park for its first race weekend in Türkiye from 1-3 October. The event remains subject to FIA circuit homologation and coincides with Istanbul’s return to the Formula 1 calendar.
The Turkish circuit becomes the first of two new Formula 2 venues in 2027 and adds another demanding circuit during a critical stage of the championship. Its inclusion also means the series will continue racing into October rather than entering a lengthy break following the European portion of the campaign.
Istanbul Park’s combination of high-speed sections and technical corners should provide a very different challenge from Baku one week earlier. With the round taking place immediately after the Azerbaijan event, teams will also face another demanding logistical turnaround as the championship approaches its final quarter.
Mexico City strengthens Formula 2’s presence in the Americas
Mexico City will become Formula 2’s second new destination when the championship visits the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez from 29-31 October. Its addition gives the series another North American event alongside Montreal and introduces Formula 2 to the Mexican Grand Prix weekend for the first time.
The round was announced during a press conference attended by Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel, Formula 1 Gran Premio de la Ciudad de México Managing Director Federico Gonzalez Compean and Formula 2 drivers Rafael Villagómez and Noel León.
Mexico City also plays an important role in reshaping the latter part of the schedule. Rather than facing an extended wait before the final Middle Eastern rounds, teams will compete twice during October, first at Istanbul and then in Mexico.
Michel welcomed the expanded geographical reach while stressing that Formula 2 intends to limit the financial impact on its teams.
“I’m very excited to add three new venues in a financially sustainable way, with the return of Montreal following its surprise addition in 2026 and the first appearance of Istanbul and Mexico City. We will be covering freight costs so that the territorial expansion of the calendar does not financially impact our teams.”
He added: “With a calendar spanning four continents and a carefully distributed sequence of Rounds, the 2027 FIA Formula 2 Championship will offer teams and drivers a demanding and diverse season, while bringing the category to new audiences and strengthening its position as a global platform for the next generation of Formula 1 talent.”
Lusail and Yas Island retain December conclusion
Formula 2 will take approximately a month-long break following Mexico City before returning for its traditional Middle Eastern conclusion. Lusail hosts the penultimate round from 3-5 December before the championship travels directly to Abu Dhabi for the Yas Island finale from 10-12 December.
The Qatar-Abu Dhabi double-header therefore remains intact, but the route towards those final two events changes significantly. The addition of Istanbul and Mexico City means drivers will face Baku, Istanbul and Mexico City during the weeks leading into the final break rather than completing most of the second half of the campaign in Europe.
The revised calendar retains the 14-round structure while creating a more balanced spread of events across the year. Bahrain, Jeddah and Melbourne form the opening flyaway phase, Montreal provides the first trip to the Americas, and five established European venues take the championship through the middle of the season before Baku begins a more internationally diverse run towards the finale.
With Montreal returning and Istanbul and Mexico City joining for the first time, the 2027 Formula 2 season will offer its drivers an increasingly varied test as they compete for the championship and attempt to establish themselves as the next generation of Formula 1 talent.
