After securing P14 in qualifying in Barcelona, the Aston Martin team issued a statement stating that Lance Stroll will not race at the F1 Spanish GP on Sunday following persistent wrist and hand pain.
The Canadian driver has been under immense pain for the past six weeks, which has been linked to a previous procedure he underwent in 2023 following a cycling injury.
Statement from Aston Martin
The Aston Martin team issued the following statement:
“Over the course of the past six weeks Lance has been experiencing pain in his hand and wrist, which his medical consultant believes is in relation to the procedure he underwent in 2023.
As a result, his medical team have confirmed that he will not race tomorrow and he will undergo a procedure to rectify these issues before focusing on his recovery.”
What happened?
After careful consideration, Stroll’s medical team decided it was safer to withdraw from Sunday’s race before the issue escalated any further.
Focusing on relieving the pain at its source by undergoing another procedure.
Stemming from an injury in 2023, Stroll sustained fractures on both wrists from a biking accident, where he returned to racing after a brief recovery period.
This time, his injury forces him to prioritise long-term rest over short-term recovery to ensure he’s clear for racing and placing immense pressure on his wrists.
Stroll qualified 14th on Saturday’s qualifying at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the hopes of scoring valuable points at the F1 Spanish GP. At one point, the driver had a brilliant flying lap that saved him from elimination at the last minute in Q1 as he went P7.
Sunday for Aston Martin
His absence will leave his teammate Fernando Alonso as the sole member representing the Aston Martin green on Sunday’s race. It remains to be seen if the Spaniard will have a different teammate in Canada.
Everyone hopes for a smooth procedure and speedy recovery for Stroll as he takes time to prioritize his physical well-being.
