Campos Racing has confirmed the signing of Mattia Colnaghi for the 2027 FIA Formula 3 (F3) Championship, completing its three-driver line-up for the upcoming season. The 18-year-old Red Bull Junior Team driver will join the reigning Drivers’ and Teams’ champions after spending his rookie F3 campaign with MP Motorsport.
Colnaghi finished 13th in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship with 54 points, recovering from a difficult start to establish himself as a regular points scorer during the second half of the season. The Italian-Argentine driver will now partner returning race winner Ernesto Rivera and Ferrari Driver Academy member Salim Hanna as Campos Racing attempts to defend both championships.
Colnaghi joins Campos after consecutive junior championship titles
Colnaghi arrives at Campos Racing with an impressive record in junior single-seater competition, having secured consecutive championship titles before graduating to FIA F3. He began his single-seater career with MP Motorsport in 2024, winning the Spanish F4 Championship during his debut season with six victories and 12 podium finishes.
The following year, Colnaghi progressed into Eurocup-3 with the Dutch outfit, securing five victories on his way to the 2025 championship title. His performances also earned him a place in the Red Bull Junior Team, strengthening his prospects of progressing through the international single-seater ladder. He subsequently finished fourth in the 2025 FIA Formula Regional World Cup at Macau.
Having secured promotion to FIA F3 with MP Motorsport for 2026, Colnaghi continued working with the team that had supported his early success. However, his move to Campos marks the first change of team in his single-seater career, bringing an end to a three-year partnership with MP.
The switch provides Colnaghi with an opportunity to build on his experience while joining a team that has established itself among the championship’s leading contenders.
Difficult start gives way to stronger 2026 F3 performances
Colnaghi endured a challenging introduction to FIA F3, struggling to convert his underlying pace into consistent results during the opening rounds. Despite qualifying sixth at Melbourne, he secured only one point from the season opener and failed to add to his total during the following four rounds.
However, his campaign improved considerably at Spa-Francorchamps, where he secured fourth-place finishes in both the Sprint and Feature Races. The results marked an important turning point, providing renewed confidence after a difficult first half of the season.
Colnaghi maintained that momentum at Budapest, repeating his double fourth-place performance and demonstrating greater consistency across qualifying and race conditions. He subsequently added further points at Monza before finishing fifth in the final Feature Race at Madrid.
The Red Bull Junior concluded his rookie campaign 13th in the Drivers’ Championship with 54 points, level with ART Grand Prix’s Maciej Gładysz but behind the Pole on countback. Although Colnaghi did not secure a podium, his improved performances during the second half of 2026 provided a foundation for another season in the category.
Colnaghi targets victories in 2027 F3 campaign with reigning champions Campos
Following the announcement, Colnaghi expressed his enthusiasm about joining Campos Racing, highlighting the team’s recent success and his previous experience competing against the Spanish outfit.
“Very happy to join forces with Campos Racing for the 2027 FIA Formula 3 season,” Colnaghi said. “Having raced against the team in previous categories, I’ve always had great respect for them and the success they’ve achieved across the feeder series, especially in F3 as reigning Team and Drivers’ Champions.”
The 18-year-old also expressed confidence that his championship-winning experience in the lower categories, combined with the lessons learned during his rookie F3 season, could help him challenge for stronger results in 2027.
“After winning championships in previous categories and gaining a year of valuable experience in F3, I believe that together with Campos, we have the potential to fight for big results in 2027. Excited to get to work during post-season testing and build towards a great season.”
Colnaghi’s move to Campos provides an opportunity to pursue his first FIA F3 podium and victory. Having already demonstrated competitive race pace during the second half of 2026, he will aim to improve his qualifying consistency and establish himself among the leading championship contenders.
Campos Racing confident in Colnaghi’s potential
Campos Racing Team Principal Adrián Campos welcomed Colnaghi’s arrival, praising his achievements in the junior categories and his ability to compete for championships early in his single-seater career.
“We are very proud to welcome Mattia to our FIA Formula 3 driver line-up for 2027. He is an extremely talented driver and has shown his ability to fight for wins and championships from his very first steps in single-seaters,” Campos said.
The team principal also outlined the importance of preparing Colnaghi for his second F3 campaign, particularly as Campos attempts to maintain its recent success against an increasingly competitive field.
“We will work with him throughout the winter to make sure we are as well prepared as possible for what will be a very demanding season. After the results we have achieved over the past two years, our goal is to continue fighting at the front and defend the titles we have secured this year.”
Campos added that the team was confident Colnaghi possessed the ability to contribute to its championship ambitions. The Spanish outfit secured the Teams’ Championship in both 2025 and 2026, while Ugo Ugochukwu claimed the 2026 Drivers’ title after a closely contested season-long battle with Freddie Slater.
Campos Racing completes 2027 FIA F3 line-up with Hanna, Rivera and Colnaghi
Colnaghi’s signing completes Campos Racing’s 2027 line-up alongside Rivera and Hanna, giving the reigning champions a combination of returning experience and emerging talent.
Rivera remains with Campos for a fourth consecutive year, having secured two victories and three podium finishes during his rookie F3 campaign. The Mexican finished seventh overall with 87 points despite missing the opening round through injury. Meanwhile, Hanna joins the team following his Formula Regional European Championship campaign, where he finished seventh with one victory and three further podiums.
The trio will be tasked with defending the titles Campos secured in 2026, when the Spanish outfit finished the season with 334 points and a commanding advantage over Trident.
With two second-year F3 drivers and a promising rookie completing its line-up, Campos will enter 2027 targeting another championship challenge. For Colnaghi, the move offers an opportunity to convert his improved rookie-season performances into regular podium contention as he continues his progression through the single-seater ranks.
