Nicolás Varrone has announced his departure from Van Amersfoort Racing (VAR) with immediate effect ahead of the twelfth round of the 2026 F2 season in Baku. The Argentinian joined the championship this year following a successful career in sports car racing, most notably claiming two class victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 2026 F2 season has proved challenging for Varrone, who sits 20th in the Drivers’ Standings wtih 15 points.
Although the Argentinian has shown flashes of speed throughout the year, his best result came with a fourth-place finish in the Miami Sprint Race. Miami marked one of Varrone’s strongest outings of the season, with the Argentinian securing his best Qualifying result of the year in sixth. While he converted that pace into a strong result in the Sprint Race, a series of costly errors prevented him from replicating that success in the Feature Race.
A possible return to sports car racing?
After prematurely ending his British F3 campaign, Varrone tested an LMP3 car, a move that ultimately kickstarted his career. In 2023, the Argentinian joined Corvette Racing to race in the LMGTE Am class of the FIA World Endurance Championship, sharing the cockpit with Nicky Catsburg and Ben Keatig. The trio claimed class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and went on to secure the FIA Endurance Trophy for the LMGTE Am category that year.
Following his successful 2023 campaign, the Argentinian continued competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship, gaining experience in both LMP2 and Hypercar machinery before returning to single-seaters with Formula 2 this year.
While Varrone’s return to single-seater racing ultimately did not unfold as hoped with Van Amersfoort Racing, his strong record in endurance racing leaves the door open for a potential return to sports cars as he considers the next chapter of his career.
