The 2026 GT World Challenge (GTWC) Global Manufacturers Championship has taken a decisive turn following recent rounds at Sepang, Paul Ricard, and Circuit of The Americas. Porsche has surged to the top of the standings, ending Mercedes-AMG’s reign and igniting a fierce battle between the two German giants.
Although Porsche now leads with 232 points, the margin remains razor-thin. Mercedes-AMG trails by just nine points, ensuring that the fight for supremacy remains wide open as the season progresses across multiple continents.
Porsche seizes momentum in 2026 GTWC Global Manufacturers Championship with COTA dominance
Porsche’s rise to the top stems largely from a commanding performance at Circuit of The Americas. The manufacturer delivered a near-perfect weekend, collecting a maximum 80 points and asserting itself as the benchmark in the evolving three-hour race format.
Wright Motorsports led the charge with a dominant one-two finish. Dave Musial Jr. and Ryan Yardley secured both the Pro-Am class and overall victory in the No. 31 Porsche 911 GT3-R (992) EVO after executing a flawless race.
Meanwhile, teammates Therese Lahlouh and Thomas Merrill completed the one-two finish, achieving their maiden podium in the series. To underline Porsche’s dominance, JP Martinez and Jan Heylen secured third place for RS1, marking a second consecutive race sweep for the Stuttgart marque.
As a result, Porsche has firmly positioned itself as the team to beat heading into the next phase of the championship.
Mercedes-AMG maintain pressure despite losing lead
Despite slipping to second in the standings, Mercedes-AMG delivered another highly competitive weekend at COTA. The pairing of Michai Stephens and Mikael Grenier continued their dominant Pro-class form with back-to-back victories in the No. 34 JMF Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO.
Furthermore, the duo secured pole position for the second consecutive race by topping both qualifying sessions, reinforcing their status as one of the strongest combinations on the grid.
However, penalties during the race ultimately denied them the overall win. Even so, their consistent performance ensures Mercedes-AMG remains firmly within striking distance of the championship lead.
BMW M strengthen grip on third place in the 2026 GTWC Global Manufacturers Championship
While the spotlight focuses on Porsche and Mercedes-AMG, BMW M has quietly moved into third position in the standings. With 143 points, the Bavarian manufacturer still faces a significant gap to the leaders, yet its upward trajectory signals growing competitiveness.
At COTA, Turner Motorsport drivers Justin Rothberg and Robby Foley delivered a standout performance. They secured a second-place finish in the Pro class, marking their first podium since stepping up to the category.
Moreover, their late-race charge against JMF Motorsports demonstrated BMW’s improving pace, suggesting they could soon challenge more consistently at the front.
Title battle set for global showdown
Looking ahead, the championship promises even greater intensity. With events scheduled at Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit and Brands Hatch Circuit, the global nature of the series will test teams across varying conditions and circuits.
At the same time, the American championship resumes at Sebring International Raceway, a notoriously demanding venue that often reshapes championship narratives.
Ultimately, with such fine margins separating the top manufacturers, every race, strategy call, and point scored will carry significant weight. Porsche may lead for now, but Mercedes-AMG remains close enough to strike at any moment, ensuring that the fight for the 2026 title remains wide open.
