Tuukka Taponen believes second place in the 2026 F3 Monza Feature Race finally rewarded the progress MP Motorsport has made during the latter stages of the season.
The Finn started eighth at Monza but steadily moved through the field during a chaotic contest, eventually emerging as Nicola Lacorte’s closest challenger for victory. Although front tyre graining and the loss of DRS during the closing stages limited his opportunity to attack for the win, Taponen still secured his strongest result of the 2026 F3 campaign.
More importantly, the Monza podium delivered a substantial points return after several previous opportunities disappeared through setbacks outside Taponen’s control. With MP Motorsport showing stronger pace across recent rounds, second place provided tangible evidence that the team’s development had begun to translate into results.
Taponen finally converts improving pace in 2026 F3 Monza race
Taponen endured a difficult opening part of the 2026 F3 season, but MP Motorsport found additional pace several rounds before Monza and increasingly became capable of fighting near the front. However, that improvement did not immediately produce the results Taponen felt were available, with multiple punctures proving particularly costly across previous weekends.
Monza finally changed that pattern. Starting eighth rather than among the leading rows placed Taponen in another recovery situation, but he converted MP Motorsport’s underlying performance into a significant result rather than leaving Italy with another missed opportunity.
“Yes, you can say finally. It’s been a very tough year, especially at the beginning of the season. A few rounds ago we found some pace and since that we have been fighting at the front. Luck has not been on our side. Three punctures in two races has ruined a lot of points. But finally, starting from P8 and finishing in P2 is a very good result. The team is really deserving that. We have been fighting with the result to get the result and finally we get it.”
For Taponen, therefore, second place carried significance beyond the podium itself. It rewarded the progress MP Motorsport had continued to make even when earlier 2026 F3 results failed to reflect the team’s true competitiveness.
2026 F3 Monza battles help Taponen move forward
The 2026 F3 Monza Feature Race produced constant position changes throughout the leading group, with the slipstream repeatedly bringing several drivers together into Monza’s heavy braking zones. For Taponen, that aggressive racing often worked in his favour because he continued moving forwards rather than becoming trapped behind slower cars.
He gradually climbed into podium contention and eventually became part of the fight for victory, briefly moving ahead of Lacorte before the Italian reclaimed the lead. However, the balance of the race changed during the closing stages as front tyre graining reduced Taponen’s ability to remain close enough to mount another attack.
“It was quite hectic. I was going forward all the time. It was quite good for me with the fights. Just at the end we started to get that front graining. It was very difficult to get close to the car in front. We didn’t have the DRS because there was a yellow flag in Turn 1. It didn’t really help to fight for the win, but I have to be happy for P2 as well.”
The yellow flag at Turn 1 also removed another important weapon when officials disabled DRS. With Monza’s long straights making DRS especially valuable, losing it significantly reduced Taponen’s chances of challenging Lacorte before the chequered flag.
Taponen takes 2026 F3 Monza momentum towards Madrid
Taponen now turns towards Madrid after F3 completed testing at the new circuit ahead of the expanded season finale. Unlike Monza, where the tow and DRS create repeated passing opportunities, he expects overtaking to prove much more difficult at the Madring, placing greater importance on starting position.
Consequently, Taponen sees Qualifying as one of the decisive elements of the final 2026 F3 weekend. A clean session would allow him to build from the front rather than depending on another recovery drive like the one he produced at Monza.
“Let’s hope that it will be clean in Qualifying and we can drive a decent session. I think it’s super important in Madrid because overtaking is very difficult.”
That importance increases further because Madrid will feature two Qualifying sessions, two Feature Races and one Sprint Race. With more points available than during a standard F3 round, strong grid positions could shape Taponen’s entire weekend.
Taponen wants 2026 F3 Monza result to begin strong finish
Despite the difficulties that shaped the early part of his 2026 F3 campaign, Taponen heads towards the finale with MP Motorsport in considerably stronger form. Rather than changing the approach that produced the Monza podium, he wants the team to continue building on the progress already established during recent rounds.
The priority now involves turning that pace into consistent points and ensuring that the Monza result does not stand alone as the high point of the late-season improvement.
“The objective is to keep going with this momentum that we have had for a few rounds already. And then convert it to good results.”
Monza demonstrated what that conversion can produce. Taponen climbed six positions, fought at the front and secured 18 valuable points while giving MP Motorsport another indication that its recent development has moved the team in the right direction.
Madrid now gives Taponen one final opportunity to carry that 2026 F3 Monza momentum forward and conclude the season with another result that reflects MP Motorsport’s improved pace.
