TOYOTA GAZOO Racing New Zealand (TGRNZ) has confirmed a compact four-round calendar for the 2027 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy (CTFROT), with the season set to unfold across four consecutive race weekends.
The series will take up to 22 drivers to some of New Zealand’s most demanding and distinctive circuits, with the campaign culminating in the 71st NAPA New Zealand Grand Prix at Highlands Motorsport Park.
Across practice, qualifying and race sessions, drivers will complete approximately 3,500km of running. As a result, the series will again offer a valuable winter development platform for rising international talent before many competitors begin major Northern Hemisphere campaigns.
North Island opens the 2027 CTFROT season
The 2027 campaign will begin on New Zealand’s North Island at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park. The opening round will take place on the venue’s full international circuit from January 8-10, as part of the Allied Petroleum Hampton Downs International meeting.
Then, just one week later, the series will move to Taupo International Motorsport Park. Round 2 will run during the Giltrap Group Taupo Historic Grand Prix event, giving drivers another technically demanding test early in the season.
Together, the first two events will set the tone for a fast-paced campaign. Moreover, the short gap between rounds will reward drivers and teams that adapt quickly and build momentum from the opening weekend.
South Island hosts decisive final rounds on 2027 CTFROT calendar
After the North Island double-header, teams will head south for the second half of the season. Round 3 will take place at Invercargill’s historic Teretonga Raceway during the Ascot Park Hotel Teretonga Park International.
Teretonga’s unique layout and coastal setting will give drivers a very different challenge from the opening two rounds. Therefore, consistency across varied circuits will play a key role in shaping the title fight.
The season will then conclude at Highlands Motorsport Park with the 71st NAPA New Zealand Grand Prix. The venue will provide a scenic but demanding final test, while the New Zealand Grand Prix will again give the championship a prestigious headline event.
NextGen partnership continues to strengthen domestic motorsport
The Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy (CTFROT) will run all four rounds within the calendar promoted by official MotorSport NZ-appointed promoter NextGen.
Now entering its third year, the Repco NextGen NZ season has brought together several of New Zealand’s leading championships. In doing so, it has helped restore premier-level domestic motorsport’s visibility among both local and international audiences.
The partnership also places CTFROT within a broader national motorsport platform. Consequently, the championship will benefit from a more unified event structure as it prepares to introduce its new Gen 2 car.
CTFROT remains a key global development platform
Formula Regional Oceania will enter its 22nd season with a strong reputation as a launchpad for emerging talent. Its position during the Northern Hemisphere off-season gives young drivers valuable race mileage before they return to international junior categories.
That timing remains one of the championship’s greatest strengths. Drivers can sharpen their racecraft, learn new circuits and build competitive rhythm before their main European, Asian or North American seasons begin.
The series’ roll of honour also reflects its development value. Nine drivers from the 2026 campaign are competing in FIA Formula 3 this year, while previous names associated with the championship include F1 world champion Lando Norris, as well as winners from Le Mans, GT racing, Formula E, Supercars and several other major categories.
TGRNZ highlights performance and development mission
TGRNZ Motorsport Manager Nicolas Caillol said the championship reflects the wider values of the brand’s racing programme.
“The Castrol Toyota FR Oceania Trophy represents everything TOYOTA GAZOO Racing stands for – performance, development of people, development of technology and a platform where everyone involved on and off the track can push their limits and explore their potential,” explained TOYOTA GAZOO Racing New Zealand Motorsport Manager Nicolas Caillol.
“We are very proud of that and in NextGen having a partner as equally determined as we are to succeed. NextGen has re-energised domestic motorsport over the past few years and we look forward to what should be an outstanding first season working alongside them with our new Gen 2 car.
“2027 is a major year for us from grassroots to global pathways, and this calendar embodies TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s mission: to develop ever-better cars, ever-better drivers, and ever-better motorsport.”
CTFROT 2027 offers a demanding route to the New Zealand Grand Prix
With four rounds across four weekends, the 2027 CTFROT will offer little room for error. Drivers will need speed, adaptability and consistency across Hampton Downs, Taupo, Teretonga and Highlands.
The schedule also reinforces the championship’s appeal as a serious preparation ground for elite junior racers. By combining high mileage, technical circuits, and the prestige of the New Zealand Grand Prix, Formula Regional Oceania has once again built a calendar designed to test and develop the next generation of international talent.
