Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff spoke about Kimi Antonelli’s potential championship contention following the 2026 F1 Chinese GP. The Brackley-based team have had a strong start, winning the first two races of the season. Mercedes are currently 31 points ahead of Ferrari in the World Constructors’ Championship.

Antonelli scored his maiden pole position and victory in F1 at the 2026 Chinese GP, finishing the race ahead of Russell by 5.5 seconds. In terms of the World Drivers’ Championship, both Mercedes drivers are close in the points. Following the F1 Chinese GP, George Russell leads Antonelli by four points.

Many wonder if Antonelli will be able to challenge Russell for the 2026 F1 championship.

Wolff on Antonelli’s 2026 F1 championship hopes

In the print media session following the F1 Chinese GP, Toto Wolff stated that Antonelli needs time to grow as a driver. The young Italian faced immense pressure during his rookie season, and Wolff urged media outlets to avoid repeating that pattern this year.

“First of all, you can kind of see the hype that is going to start now, especially in Italy. I see already the headlines, ‘World Champion’, ‘Grande Kimi’, and whatever. And that’s really not good.

Because those mistakes are going to come and he’s just a kid. So it’s too early to even think about a championship.

We have a good car that, at that stage, is capable of winning. Let’s see what kind of political knives are going to come out in the next few weeks and months. But at the moment, it’s a car that is capable of winning.”

Wolff continued, emphasizing that both Russell and Antonelli will be given equal opportunity to fight for the 2026 F1 championship. However, Russell is the driver with an advantage, having joined the sport in 2019.

Both have equal opportunity. But so long to talk about winning championships. And I think, as a young person, he just needs the maturity to grow.

And he has a fantastic driver as a teammate [Russell], who is eight years longer in that spot.

A rivalry like Hamilton and Rosberg?

Mercedes are no stranger to a title fight between teammates. In 2016, Wolff managed a title rivalry between teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg — a fight plagued by drama both on and off the track. While Rosberg eventually became the 2016 champion, he announced his retirement from the sport immediately afterwards.

When asked if Russell and Antonelli’s relationship may become a mirror to Mercedes’ 2016 championship fight, Toto Wolff responded, “That is completely different.

“Nico [Rosberg] and Lewis [Hamilton] knew each other from karting, from the early days, being friends, but also having this social fight that was always ingrained in there.

“And then it got — what was a friendship, then became a healthy rivalry, then a rivalry, and then animosity. And it was two very different characters. But having said that, you just need to appreciate that drivers are here and are like they are in order to win races and championships.

“And the moment you sniff that, obviously, then the elbows come out. That’s something that the team needs to manage. But both of them [Russell and Antonelli] are Mercedes juniors.

“We’ve been responsible for their trajectory since they’ve come into single-seaters, Kimi [Antonelli] even in karting. So I feel at that stage, and maybe I’m going to bite my tongue one day, I feel that we’re in a totally different situation.”
