The 2026 International GT Open season continued at Spa-Francorchamps with the first endurance race of the year, and the GT Open 500 delivered a decisive shift in the championship picture. After a competitive Portimão opener, Round 2 placed strategy, consistency, and adaptability at the forefront, with changing track conditions shaping the rhythm of the weekend.

Team Motopark arrived in Belgium already firmly in contention, but Christian Mansell and Maximilian Götz left Spa as the new benchmark. Across qualifying and the race, the #71 Mercedes AMG GT3 EVO proved untouchable, taking pole position before controlling the 71-lap race from lights to flag. Their victory also came at a crucial moment, as ZRS Motorsport retired and Greystone GT endured a difficult race outside the top ten.

As a result, Mansell and Götz moved into the provisional championship lead with 54 points, 12 clear of Tom Emson and Tom Lebbon, while Dean Macdonald and Zac Meakin dropped to third after finishing 13th at Spa.

Overall, the weekend underlined both Motopark’s strength and the unpredictability of the GT Open season, with Elite Motorsport, Villorba Corse, Fach Auto Tech, Blackthorn, and several Pro-Am contenders also emerging strongly from a demanding Belgian round.

2026 International GT Open: Spa-Francorchamps: Free Practice Sessions

Spa-Francorchamps welcomed the GT Open field with typical Ardennes conditions, as cold temperatures, overcast skies, light rain, and brief sunshine kept teams constantly adjusting. Despite the changing weather, the practice sessions produced a competitive picture, with several manufacturers represented near the front and tight margins across the field.

AF Corse set the early benchmark in Free Practice 1, as Laurent De Meeus and Vincent Abril placed the #55 Ferrari 296 GT3 EVO at the top with a 2:16.499. Optimum Motorsport followed closely, while Team Motopark also showed strong pace, with Christian Mansell and Maximilian Götz placing third, just 0.402s off the fastest time. PTT Racing impressed with its BMW M4 GT3 EVO, while Into Africa Racing, Olimp Racing, Saintéloc Racing, Team ISR, and AF Corse’s PRO entry also remained competitive.

Free Practice 2 then saw ZRS Motorsport move to the top, with Pietro Armanni and Norbert Siedler setting a 2:16.680 in the #911 Porsche. Villorba Corse followed in second, while CBRX by SPS led Pro-Am in third overall.

Meanwhile, the Bronze-focused Free Practice 3 was led by Team ISR, as Filip Salaquarda and Libor Milota topped the session with a 2:19.657. Fach Auto Tech placed second in Pro-Am, while Baron Motorsport led the Am runners.

However, the weekend was not without disruption, as the #55 AF Corse Ferrari later lost a wheel in Free Practice 2, bringing out a red flag and underlining the demanding nature of Spa.

Qualifying for the GT Open 500 produced a clear statement from Team Motopark. Unlike some endurance qualifying formats where averages create strategic complexity, the fight for pole was straightforward: Mansell topped the Driver 1 session, Götz topped the Driver 2 session, and their combined average secured pole for the #71 Mercedes.

Mansell’s 2:14.708 was the fastest lap of the qualifying day, while Götz followed with a 2:15.337 in the second session. Together, they produced an average of 2:15.023, placing them 0.699s ahead of Villorba Corse’s Leonardo Moncini and Rodrigo Testa.

The fight behind them remained intense. Villorba Corse’s Lamborghini briefly looked capable of challenging for pole, but a red flag caused by the Good Speed Racing Team car of Piotr Wira going off and becoming stuck in the gravel ended the duel early. Elite Motorsport secured third on the grid with Tom Emson and Tom Lebbon, while ZRS Motorsport placed fourth with Armanni and Siedler.

Greystone GT filled the third row with the #33 of Meakin/Macdonald and the #44 of Kelly/Cresswell. That meant the top six positions featured five different car brands, reinforcing the competitive variety of the field.

In Pro-Am, CBRX by SPS led the way, with Dexter Müller and Yannick Mettler placing tenth overall. In Am, 2 Seas Motorsport initially led the category in the combined order through Scott Noble and Jason Hart, while Fach Auto Tech’s Joel Monegro Reyes and Lucas Wolf remained close behind.

The GT Open 500 began on a humid track, with caution defining the opening laps. Götz retained the lead from pole, while Emson initially ran second ahead of Testa, Siedler, Meakin, Cresswell, Darmetko, Müller, Veselaho, and Durán. Although the field settled into a relatively clean rhythm, the slippery conditions made position-holding difficult. Emson and Testa came under pressure, while Morgan Tillbrook spun on lap 8. By lap 10, Götz had built a three-second advantage over Siedler.

In Am, Joel Monegro Reyes led for Fach Auto Tech ahead of Marcelo Hahn and Adrian Lewandowski. Shortly afterwards, Scott Noble stopped on track, while Laurent De Meeus spun at Eau Rouge with a slow puncture and made light contact with the tyre barrier. That incident triggered a Full Course Yellow and then a safety car, compressing the field.

Driver changes and mid-race drama

After the first driver changes, Mansell retained the lead, with Alexander Fach close behind in the Pro-Am-leading Fach Auto Tech Porsche. Dean Macdonald ran third, while Tom Lebbon was soon passed by Tommaso Mosca for fourth. Behind them, Moncini, Yifei Ye, Ben Barnicoat, Jayden Kelly, Karol Basz, and Jonny Adam remained in the top-ten fight.

The second stint remained stable until the next pit cycle, when Ye and Basz made contact at the chicane before pit entry. Soon after, the #911 ZRS Motorsport Porsche stopped at the chicane with a smoking engine, ending a difficult race for one of the championship contenders.

Final stint and overall victory

The third stint allowed Götz to stretch the lead significantly, growing the gap to 20 seconds before Emson moved into second on lap 42. As conditions remained treacherous, Müller, Marcin Jedliński, and Tillbrook all encountered trouble on the slippery track.

After the final driver-change window opened on lap 49, Mansell emerged with a 15-second lead over Lebbon, with Moncini and Mosca also in contention. The closing phase focused on the fight for second, but Mosca stopped with a technical issue, leaving Lebbon to defend successfully from Moncini. At the front, Mansell and Götz completed a lights-to-flag victory for Team Motopark, winning by 24.308s after 71 laps.

Class battles

In Pro-Am, Fach Auto Tech delivered a commanding class win with Alexander Fach and Alexander Schwarzer, finishing fourth overall. Blackthorn took second in class with Charles Bateman and Jonny Adam, while Optimum Motorsport completed the podium with Tillbrook and Barnicoat.

In Am, Fach Auto Tech also triumphed, as Joel Monegro Reyes and Lucas Wolf won the category despite finishing one lap down overall. AF Corse’s Marcelo Hahn and Galid Osman finished second, while Baron Motorsport completed the class podium with Adrian and Andrzej Lewandowski.

The second round of the 2026 International GT Open season significantly reshaped the championship battle. After a perfect Spa weekend, Christian Mansell and Maximilian Götz moved into the overall lead with 54 points. Their two second-place finishes at Portimão had already given them a strong base, but victory in the GT Open 500 turned that consistency into a clear advantage.

Tom Emson and Tom Lebbon now sit second on 42 points after another strong weekend for Elite Motorsport. Their runner-up finish at Spa, combined with solid results at Portimão, makes them Motopark’s closest challengers heading into the next round.

Meanwhile, Dean Macdonald and Zac Meakin remain third with 25 points, but Spa proved costly. After leading the standings following Portimão, their 13th-place finish allowed Mansell and Götz to open a gap. Alex Fontana and Pietro Armanni sit fourth on 23 points after ZRS Motorsport failed to finish, while Alexander Fach and Alexander Schwarzer climbed to fifth overall with 21 points after their dominant Pro-Am win.

In Pro-Am, Fach and Schwarzer now share the lead with Charles Bateman on 31 points. Jim Pla and Michaël Blanchemain follow on 22, while Marcin Jedliński and Karol Basz remain in contention with 17. The Am standings are equally close, with Galid Osman and Marcelo Hahn tied with Joel Monegro Reyes on 32 points. Adrian and Andrzej Lewandowski sit just two points behind.

In the teams’ standings, Team Motopark strengthened its position at the front, while Fach Auto Tech emerged as one of the round’s biggest movers after winning both Pro-Am and Am at Spa.

Conclusion

The GT Open 500 at Spa-Francorchamps delivered a defining early-season performance from Team Motopark. Mansell and Götz were the class of the field from qualifying through to the chequered flag, and their ability to control the race in constantly changing conditions has placed them firmly at the head of the 2026 title battle.

However, the wider championship remains far from settled. Elite Motorsport has emerged as a consistent threat, Villorba Corse announced itself with a maiden podium, and Greystone GT and ZRS Motorsport will be eager to recover after costly weekends. In the classes, Fach Auto Tech’s double success in Pro-Am and Am has added another major storyline, particularly with both class championships now tightly contested.

As the series moves on from Spa, Motopark holds the advantage, but the depth of the field suggests the fight for the 2026 International GT Open title is only beginning.
