The 2026 International GT Open season will enter new territory this weekend as the championship visits Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for the first time in its history.

The third round of the campaign marks a significant milestone for the series. After 21 previous editions, Misano becomes the 22nd different circuit to host an International GT Open event since the championship began in 2006.

Located on the Adriatic Riviera between Misano Adriatico and Santa Monica, the Italian venue offers a fresh challenge for teams and drivers. It also gives the GT Open paddock a new destination combining technical racing demands with one of Italy’s most popular coastal regions.

Misano adds a new chapter to GT Open history

The arrival of Misano adds another important circuit to the International GT Open story. Since its launch, the championship has built a broad European footprint, visiting established Grand Prix venues, historic national circuits and modern international facilities.

Misano now joins that list as the latest new addition. Its inclusion gives the 2026 calendar a fresh identity and creates extra anticipation around the third round of the season.

For teams and drivers, the new venue brings an immediate challenge. Unlike regular calendar stops such as Monza, Spa-Francorchamps, Barcelona or Paul Ricard, Misano does not carry years of GT Open reference data. Therefore, preparation, adaptation and Friday running will play an important role in shaping the weekend.

A technical circuit on the Adriatic Riviera

Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli has a long motorsport history. Built in 1972, the circuit has undergone several upgrades across the decades and now carries the name of late MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli.

The 4.064-kilometre layout gives drivers a technical test. Although the circuit originally ran counter-clockwise, its modern configuration has become a familiar challenge across international motorcycle and car racing.

Its layout rewards rhythm, precision and traction. As a result, teams will need to find a balanced setup that allows drivers to attack the tighter sections while preserving stability through the faster parts of the lap.

Misano’s location also adds to the appeal of the weekend. The circuit sits close to Rimini’s beaches, San Marino and the wider Romagna region, giving the championship a lively backdrop as it makes its first visit.

Misano has earned strong recognition across both motorcycle and car racing. Its technical nature, modern facilities and coastal location have helped it become one of Italy’s most popular racing venues.

For the International GT Open field, the circuit introduces a different kind of challenge from the faster, more established championship venues. The layout places emphasis on braking consistency, rotation through technical corners and clean exits onto short acceleration zones.

That could tighten the competitive order. With limited previous GT Open experience at the circuit, teams will need to build knowledge quickly. Drivers who adapt early could gain a decisive advantage, particularly during qualifying.

Consequently, the Misano round has the potential to reshuffle the early-season picture. A new track often rewards those who settle fastest, and that could create opportunities throughout the field.

Misano becomes the championship’s 22nd venue

Misano’s arrival makes it the 22nd circuit to appear on the International GT Open calendar since 2006. The championship’s venue list now stretches across several major European racing markets, reflecting its long-running presence in GT racing.

The series has raced at Italian venues including Monza, Imola and Vallelunga, while also visiting major circuits such as Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone, Hockenheim, the Red Bull Ring, Barcelona, Paul Ricard, Portimão, Estoril and the Hungaroring.

Some venues have become long-term fixtures. Monza and Barcelona have appeared on the calendar since the championship’s first season, while Spa-Francorchamps and Paul Ricard have also become regular stops. Others, such as Brands Hatch, Donington Park, Istanbul Park and the Valencia Street Circuit, form part of the series’ wider history.

Misano now adds a new name to that heritage. Its debut also reinforces the championship’s willingness to refresh the calendar while maintaining links with established European circuits.

A fresh challenge for the 2026 season

The first International GT Open visit to Misano gives the 2026 season an important new storyline. The championship arrives at a circuit with strong character, a demanding layout and no previous GT Open form book.

That combination should make the weekend particularly interesting. Teams must learn quickly, drivers must build confidence early, and small setup choices could create meaningful differences across the field.

As Misano joins the championship’s history as its 22nd venue, the third round offers more than another stop on the calendar. It brings a fresh test, a new backdrop and another chapter in the continuing development of the International GT Open.
