Doriane Pin continued her impressive Le Mans week by topping LMP2 Qualifying for Duqueine Team, while Peter Dempsey placed Racing Team Turkey by TF at the head of the LMGT3 order.

The two classes opened Wednesday evening’s Qualifying action at the Circuit de la Sarthe, with the fastest 15 cars in each category securing places in Thursday’s Hyperpole 1 session. Pin delivered a 3:34.662 in the #30 Duqueine Team ORECA-Gibson to lead LMP2, while Dempsey produced a 3:55.744 in the #34 Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R to set the pace in LMGT3.

Pin keeps Duqueine on top

Pin had already starred in FP1, and she carried that momentum into Qualifying. The French driver placed the #30 Duqueine Team ORECA-Gibson at the top of the LMP2 order with a 3:34.662.

The session began with IDEC Sport setting the early reference point, as Paul Lafargue placed the #28 ORECA at the head of the first representative laps. However, the order soon changed as the younger drivers began to push.

Ian Aguilera initially moved the #37 CLX Motorsport entry to the top with a strong lap, before Pin responded for Duqueine. The pair then traded times in a close fight for overall LMP2 honours. Aguilera reclaimed first with a 3:35.229, but Pin answered again. Therefore, her final benchmark put the #30 car 0.567s clear of the CLX Motorsport entry and confirmed Duqueine as the class leader.

Meanwhile, Aguilera finished second in the #37 CLX Motorsport ORECA, continuing an impressive week for one of the youngest drivers on the grid. Behind him, Bijoy Garg placed the #343 Inter Europol Competition entry third, 0.832s away from Pin’s benchmark. Therefore, that made the #343 car the only other LMP2 entry to finish within a second of the fastest time. Forestier Racing by Panis followed in fourth with the #29 car, while Vector Sport completed the top five.

Inter Europol also secured sixth with the #43 entry, ahead of United Autosports’ #22 car in seventh and Nielsen Racing’s #24 machine in eighth.

Pro/Am runners secure Hyperpole places

IDEC Sport eventually finished ninth after its early benchmark, while the #9 Iron Lynx-Proton entry completed the top ten. The leading Pro/Am runners also made it safely through. Meanwhile, AO by TF placed 11th, CrowdStrike Racing by APR finished 12th, AF Corse took 13th, and TDS Racing ended 14th. Finallu. United Autosports secured the final Hyperpole 1 place with the #222 entry in 15th.

However, four cars missed the cut. The #44 Proton Competition entry, #25 Algarve Pro Racing, #48 RD Limited and #3 DKR Engineering machines will not progress to Thursday’s Hyperpole session.

Dempsey stars for Corvette as Ford and Aston Martin complete the top three

Peter Dempsey led the way in LMGT3, placing the #34 Racing Team Turkey by TF Corvette at the top of the category. The Irishman delivered a 3:55.744 in the Bronze-driver Qualifying session, reprising the strong form he showed earlier in the season at Imola. His lap gave the Corvette squad top spot by 0.207s. Dempsey’s performance also came on his Le Mans debut, adding to the significance of the result for both driver and team.

Eric Powell placed the #77 Proton Competition Ford Mustang second with a 3:55.951. It marked one of Ford’s strongest showings so far with the Mustang LMGT3 at Le Mans. Furthermore, Gray Newell followed in third for Heart of Racing Team. The #23 Aston Martin Vantage AMR LMGT3 finished only 0.024s behind Powell, completing a top three made up entirely of Le Mans debutants.

James Cottingham then vaulted to fourth late on in the #91 Manthey DK Engineering Porsche. The Briton had flirted with the drop zone earlier in the session, but his late improvement moved him safely into Hyperpole 1. Darren Leung completed the top five in the #32 Team WRT BMW.

Seven marques fill the top seven

LMGT3 once again showed the depth of its manufacturer competition. Seven different marques occupied the first seven positions, with Corvette, Ford, Aston Martin, Porsche, BMW, Ferrari and Lexus all represented. Dustin Blattner placed the #74 Kessel Racing Ferrari sixth, while Petru Umbrărescu followed in seventh for Akkodis ASP Team’s #87 Lexus. Additionally, the second Heart of Racing Aston Martin finished eighth, ahead of Team WRT’s #69 BMW and the #88 Proton Competition Ford Mustang.

Iron Lynx secured 11th with the #61 Mercedes-AMG, while VISTA AF Corse placed both Ferraris inside the top 15. The #21 car finished 12th, while the #54 entry took 14th. The #78 Akkodis ASP Team Lexus also progressed in 13th, while Yasser Shahin claimed the final Hyperpole 1 spot for The Bend Manthey in the #92 Porsche.

Mercedes, McLaren and Corvette miss out

The fight for the final Hyperpole 1 places produced several notable casualties.

The #62 Team Qatar by Iron Lynx Mercedes, which had shown strong pace earlier in the day, missed the cut by just 0.065s. Therefore, that left the Mercedes entry 16th and outside Thursday’s Qualifying shootout. Garage 59 also endured a difficult session. The #10 McLaren finished 17th, while the sister #58 car ended 23rd. As a result, the category’s newest winning team will start far lower than expected. TF Sport’s #33 Corvette also missed out in 18th, while the #79 Iron Lynx Mercedes, #150 Richard Mille AF Corse Ferrari, #57 Kessel Racing Ferrari and #59 Racing Spirit of Léman Aston Martin were also eliminated.
