The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) will return to the United Kingdom in 2027, with Silverstone confirmed on the series’ schedule for the first time in eight years.
The 6 Hours of Silverstone will take place from 23-25 April and will form the third round of the 2027 campaign. It will slot between the 6 Hours of Imola and the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps as the championship expands to a nine-event calendar.
The announcement revives one of endurance racing’s most significant modern partnerships. It also brings world championship-level sportscar racing back to the Home of British Motorsport, where FIA WEC previously staged eight events between 2012 and 2019.
Silverstone restores a major endurance racing link
FIA WEC CEO Frédéric Lequien welcomed the championship’s return to Silverstone and highlighted the role of the circuit, its history and British fans in bringing the event back to the calendar.
“We are excited to be returning to Silverstone next season, and I would like to thank Stuart Pringle and the British Racing Drivers’ Club for making this comeback possible. Silverstone is a venue steeped in motorsport history and boasts a long legacy of top-flight endurance racing, including eight hugely successful FIA WEC events from 2012 to 2019. It is a circuit beloved by competitors, and from a driving and engineering point-of-view, it presents a tremendous challenge.
“Not only that, but British fans are famously enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the sport, and we are delighted that they will once again be able to enjoy the indescribable thrill of a World Championship round up close on home soil.”
The return gives UK fans their first home FIA WEC round since 2019. Moreover, it restores Silverstone’s place within a discipline that has delivered several memorable races at the Northamptonshire venue.
A historic venue with a demanding layout
Silverstone’s Grand Prix Circuit remains one of the most respected layouts in world motorsport. The first version of the track dates back to 1948, while the modern 5.891km configuration has been in use since 2011.
Its sequence of famous corners continues to test drivers, engineers and cars. Copse, Stowe, Maggots and Becketts all demand commitment, balance and precision, making Silverstone one of the most complete circuits on the international calendar.
That challenge should suit FIA WEC’s current era. With Hypercar machinery and LMGT3 cars sharing the same stage, the 6 Hours of Silverstone will require outright speed, traffic management, strategy and durability.
Silverstone’s endurance legacy runs deep
Silverstone’s endurance racing history extends far beyond the FIA WEC era. For more than 50 years, the circuit has hosted major international sportscar races and welcomed some of the discipline’s most celebrated names.
Across different periods, drivers such as Riccardo Patrese, Michele Alboreto, Jochen Mass and Stefan Bellof have claimed endurance victories at Silverstone. In addition, Le Mans legends Tom Kristensen, Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell have all added to the venue’s prestige, with the trio combining for 20 victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
That history gives the 2027 race added weight. Therefore, the returning 6 Hours of Silverstone will not simply mark another calendar addition; it will reconnect FIA WEC with one of endurance racing’s established European stages.
Hypercar giants set for British battle
The 2027 grid will bring several major manufacturers to Silverstone. Reigning world champion Ferrari, British marque Aston Martin, Toyota, Ford and McLaren will all form part of the Hypercar story, giving the race a powerful mix of heritage, national interest and global prestige.
Toyota will arrive as FIA WEC’s most successful manufacturer, while Ferrari will look to continue its modern top-class resurgence. Meanwhile, Aston Martin will carry home interest, and 2027 newcomers Ford and McLaren will aim to make an immediate impression in the championship’s headline category.
Alongside Hypercar, the LMGT3 field will also compete at Silverstone. Since its introduction two years ago, the production-based class has delivered winners from seven different brands across 18 races, underlining its depth and competitive balance.
Silverstone welcomes FIA WEC back in 2027
Silverstone Circuit Chief Executive Officer Stuart Pringle OBE said the venue’s connection with endurance racing made the championship’s return especially significant.
“Our history with the FIA World Endurance Championship and its forebears runs deep, with more than 50 years of some of the greatest endurance racing this sport has ever seen. FIA WEC is a unique and exciting championship, and we are proud to welcome it back to a circuit that demands everything from drivers and inspires an atmosphere that must be experienced to be believed.
“The spectacle of FIA WEC is like no other. We cannot wait to see it back at Silverstone in 2027, and neither can our fans.”
With a nine-event calendar, a deep Hypercar field and a full LMGT3 grid, the championship will bring one of its strongest modern eras to Britain. After eight years away, FIA WEC’s Silverstone return now gives endurance racing fans another major date to circle on the 2027 calendar.
