Toto Wolff reflected on a bittersweet afternoon for Mercedes at the 2026 F1 British GP, where George Russell claimed second place while Kimi Antonelli dropped to P15 after a front wheel shield failure forced two additional pit stops and a five-second time penalty. Speaking after the race at Silverstone, the Mercedes Team Principal addressed Russell’s qualifying struggles and the reliability issues that continue to cost the team championship points.

Wolff on Russell’s straight-line speed problem at the 2026 F1 British GP

Russell spoke publicly throughout the weekend about a straight-line speed deficit he could not explain. Wolff confirmed the issue was real but proved difficult to diagnose. The data pointed to a mechanical cause rather than anything on the power unit side.

“Yeah, he had the whole weekend a straight line issue. We couldn’t see anything on engine power. It must have been down to some kind of mechanical situation, whether it was tow or something else, but definitely the data confirmed that he was down, but very difficult to identify. That was much better today in the race. We didn’t see that anymore, but nevertheless, it’s something we need to understand,” Wolff stated.

Wolff praises Russell’s drive despite difficult circumstances

Russell’s second place at the 2026 F1 British GP came via a combination of a late Safety Car and Antonelli’s difficult afternoon on track, but Wolff pointed to the resilience his driver showed in holding on through tough circumstances.

“Yeah, the luck. You need to make your own luck. I think today he just held on to a car that he didn’t feel was good. And at the end, Max had the accident. Lewis wanted to go for the win and beat him. Hopefully, he has a bit of positive momentum.”

Antonelli’s wheel shield failure dropped him to P15 and extended a painful run of results that have cost Mercedes championship points. Wolff was direct about what needs to change.

“Another championship that we just had too many DNFs. Three victories, or second place and two victories, and for the Constructor Championship and Driver Championship, that’s something that we need to get on top of because that has been, in a way, other than the top car that we have with the great driver, the predominant issue. Everybody in the factory is a fool, you all have to solve that,” Wolff concluded.

Antonelli’s P15 finish at the 2026 F1 British GP reduced his championship lead over Russell to 25 points. Wolff stressed that Mercedes must improve its reliability to avoid losing more valuable points.
