Round 14 of the Season 12 Tokyo double-header kicked off with an impressive drive to victory from Dan Ticktum. The CUPRA KIRO driver finished ahead of Jake Dennis and Nick Cassidy after completing a last-lap overtake for the lead. The race also saw several incidents and late rain, as Mitch Evans took the championship lead away from Pascal Wehrlein, who failed to classify.
With all eyes on the final Tokyo double-header round, Round 15 began with Qualifying after FP3 was canceled due to adverse weather conditions. Edoardo Mortara dominated the session, taking his fourth pole of the season after beating António Félix da Costa by 0.677s. Ticktum secured P3 on the grid, lining up alongside Taylor Barnard in P4 and Nyck De Vries in P5.
Lights out for the Round 15 Tokyo E-Prix Race
The Round 15 Race began with a lap under the Safety Car as drivers prepared to hit the wet Tokyo Street Circuit. As the five lights went out on Lap 2, Mortara got off to a strong start while Evans jumped from P7 to P5. As the top four remained unchanged, Mortara immediately managed to extend his lead. Da Costa wasted no time, quickly responding with his first mandatory Attack Mode. Wehrlein, Nico Müller, Oliver Rowland, and Jean-Éric Vergne followed, also taking early Attack Modes.
With 2 minutes of Attack Mode left, Da Costa passed Mortara for the lead on Lap 5. Da Costa held a 4.126s lead by Lap 8. Meanwhile, running in P3, Ticktum reported that he had no grip, struggling with pace and energy. Barnard managed to overtake the falling CUPRA KIRO driver as Evans struggled to get by.
Race Control soon showed Mortara, Evans, and Da Costa a black-and-white flag for not following the director’s instructions at the start.
Martì triggers a brief Full Course Yellow
Drama struck at the halfway point as Sébastien Buemi and Pepe Martì made contact, leaving Martì in the barriers and with a DNF. The incident proved unfortunate for Mortara, who was running his Attack Mode, with over 1 minute left when a Full Course Yellow (FCY) was triggered.
The FCY ended at the end of Lap 16, bunching up the top five as Barnard and Ticktum served their first Attack Modes. Holding a massive energy advantage, Barnard charged past Mortara and Da Costa to take the Round 15 Race lead with two bold overtakes.
An intense battle began on Lap 20 as reigning World Champion defended his P5 position from an on-the-charge Evans. Unable to get by with three minutes of Attack Mode left, Evans’ race slowly began to unravel, and his frustration surfaced over the radio. Rowland, on the other hand, used his energy advantage to get past Ticktum and Mortara for P3.
Grid reshuffles as the front runners fall
Entering the final 10 laps, Rowland continued his charge, overtaking Da Costa for P2 as Barnard held the lead. Barnard responded to Rowland’s charge, leaving Rowland with the lead as he served his final 4-minute Attack Mode. In the meantime, polesitter Mortara began to fall down the field, sitting P8 during Lap 27.
Race Control handed Buemi a 5-second time penalty for causing the collision with Martì. Despite taking his final Attack Mode, Barnard’s timing ultimately proved ineffective as his rivals opted for a later Attack Mode. With that, De Vries stormed to the lead, followed by Cassidy and Vergne as the front-runners fell. However, with three laps left and 3 minutes of Attack Mode remaining, Dennis quickly found his way to the top three.
An unexpected Red Flag
Dennis’ progress was interrupted when a Red Flag was triggered after Joel Eriksson spun into the wall at Turn 7 due to contact with Mortara. Mortara then hit Envision Racing’s front, blocking the road and creating a multi-car pile-up.
As the marshals cleared the debris, Race Control announced that the race would resume for a last-lap shoot-out with a rolling start. Race Control also noted Vergne for a Red Flag infringement after not entering the pit lane.
De Vries held firm at the restart, bringing the field back to racing speeds to cross the line first. Nick Cassidy finished P2, taking his second consecutive podium, while Jake Dennis completed the podium. Dennis leaves the 2026 Formula E Tokyo Round 15 Race with the championship lead as Evans and Wehrlein finished P15 and P16, respectively.
