Niccolò Maccagnani will make his FIA F3 debut with Rodin Motorsport at the 2026 season finale in Madrid, replacing Christian Ho after the Singaporean elected not to contest the final round.
The 16-year-old Maccagnani steps up from Italian F4, where he has recorded two victories and four podiums during the 2026 campaign. His Madrid appearance represents the latest stage of a rapid single-seater progression after he also finished second in the 2025 Formula Trophy and fourth in the Formula 4 South East Asia Championship.
Ho, meanwhile, has confirmed that his absence relates to preparations for mandatory national service in Singapore. The 19-year-old also indicated that the requirement will probably keep him away from racing for the coming years, making the Madrid withdrawal potentially the beginning of an extended break from competition rather than simply an early conclusion to his 2026 F3 season.
Ho withdraws from Madrid ahead of Singapore national service
Ho confirmed his decision on social media ahead of the final round, explaining that he had chosen not to compete at Madring as he prepares to enlist for mandatory national service in Singapore. He also acknowledged that the upcoming commitment means he will probably not race for several years.
His statement places the Madrid withdrawal in a wider context after a difficult second F3 campaign. Ho explained that his A-level examinations had clashed with part of the season between May and early June, while the knowledge that national service would soon interrupt his racing career also affected the backdrop to his year.
In a message reflecting on his decision and his time in motorsport, Ho said:
“Hi everyone, not the announcement I wanted to make but I have decided not to race the last round in Madrid as I am preparing to enlist for my mandatory national service in Singapore. This also means that I will likely not be racing for the coming years. This years campaign has been underwhelming in part due to clashes with my a levels from may to early June but also with knowing that I probably would not be doing any racing due to my national service. Nevertheless, I want to thank everyone that’s been a part of this journey, I’ve learnt many life lessons and certainly have had a lot of fun along the way:)! I also want to personally thank my family, my sponsors and coaches for always supporting me because I could never have done all this without them. Like I said, so far I have no plans yet racing wise but probably going to uni after my ns! But I’ll definitely do some stuff which will be related to racing and keep you guys updated! Thanks for all the support along the way!🙏. Also I want to thank @rodin.motorsport for this year, of course not that way I wanted it to go but thanks for the continued support and the great car as well🙏”
The statement therefore leaves Ho’s longer-term racing future open. He currently has no firm competition plans after completing his national service and expects university to follow, although he intends to remain involved in racing-related activities during that period.
Maccagnani earns late-season Formula 3 opportunity
Ho’s withdrawal creates an opportunity for Maccagnani to make his first F3 start before completing his current Formula 4 campaign. The Italian has built momentum during 2026 with two victories and four podiums in Italian F4, adding to the experience he accumulated across several championships during his first seasons in cars.
Before his current campaign, Maccagnani finished runner-up in the 2025 Formula Trophy and fourth overall in Formula 4 South East Asia. Those results established him among the emerging drivers from his generation, while his performances this season have now led to his first opportunity in the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
Madrid will nevertheless represent a substantial step. Maccagnani must adapt from Formula 4 machinery to the greater aerodynamic load, performance and technical demands of F3 while joining the championship at its final event, when most of his rivals already have a full season of experience with the current package.
Madrid provides first F3 benchmark for Maccagnani
Rather than entering with a season-long championship objective, Maccagnani can use the Madrid weekend to establish an initial benchmark at the higher level. The finale gives him an opportunity to experience an F3 race weekend first-hand while working with Rodin Motorsport in a competitive environment.
That transition comes at an unusual event. Madrid will host the final round of the 2026 season with an expanded programme that includes two Feature Races, increasing the amount of competitive running available compared with a conventional F3 weekend.
The additional track time should help Maccagnani develop his understanding of tyre behaviour, race management and the greater aerodynamic sensitivity of the F3 car. However, the compressed nature of a race weekend still gives him limited time to adapt before Qualifying establishes his starting positions.
Ho’s withdrawal closes difficult 2026 campaign
For Ho, Madrid brings his second F3 season to an earlier end than initially planned. He joined Rodin Motorsport for 2026 after racing with DAMS Lucas Oil during his rookie campaign, having previously established himself as a front-runner in Formula 4 and Eurocup-3.
However, his second year in Formula 3 did not develop as he had hoped. Ho has now explained that his academic commitments contributed to the difficulties, particularly when his A-level examinations overlapped with the championship between May and early June.
At the same time, the prospect of mandatory national service meant he entered the campaign knowing that a prolonged interruption to his motorsport career was approaching. His decision to withdraw from Madrid allows him to turn his attention towards that commitment rather than contesting one final weekend before enlisting.
Maccagnani takes over Rodin seat for season finale
Rodin will consequently head to Madrid with Maccagnani taking Ho’s place for the final event of the 2026 championship. The change gives the Italian an early introduction to F3 while Ho begins preparing for a significantly different period away from full-time competition.
For Maccagnani, the weekend represents the biggest step of his single-seater career so far after his progression through Formula 4. For Ho, meanwhile, the withdrawal closes a chapter that has taken him from junior Formula 4 competition through Eurocup-3 and into two seasons of FIA F3.
