Formula 2 (F2) began its special 2026 Azerbaijan GP weekend with Free Practice around the Baku City Circuit, as the field prepared for an expanded schedule featuring two Qualifying sessions, one Sprint Race and two Feature Races.

The 45-minute session opened Thursday’s running before the back-to-back Qualifying sessions later in the afternoon. After the green light, the drivers headed out for their first laps, with Kush Maini setting the first representative benchmark on a 1:56.42.

Brief interruptions

The early stages featured several interruptions. Oliver Goethe briefly triggered yellow flags after going into the run-off area at Turn 3, but he managed to rejoin. Joshua Dürksen then went off at the same corner and could not continue, bringing out the Virtual Safety Car while marshals cleared his car. Goethe later stopped on track after locking up and making slight contact with the barrier at Turn 5.

Once the session resumed, the lap times began to fall. Rafael Câmara moved up to third on his first flying lap, before Martinius Stenshorne went fastest with a 1:58.808. Maini then lowered the benchmark to a 1:58.102, while his ART Grand Prix teammate Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak brushed the barrier at Turn 3.

Alexander Dunne later took over at the top for Rodin Motorsport. Stenshorne briefly went fastest despite a big moment at Turn 19, but Dunne eclipsed him with a 1:57.044. Câmara and Maini then moved into second at different stages, while Ritomo Miyata also showed strong pace.

Dunne improved again late on with a 1:56.736, while Colton Herta climbed to sixth. However, Maini found more time before the chequered flag and topped the session with a 1:56.532. Dunne finished second ahead of Nikola Tsolov, Colton Herta, Gabriele Minì, Câmara, Laurens van Hoepen, Stenshorne, Miyata and Mari Boya.
