Race 1 from IMS is in the books as round 3 of the 2025 Indy NXT season took place at the Sonsio GP, view the full report and results below. Lochie Hughes started on pole with championship leader Dennis Hauger alongside him on the front row.
There was huge drama into turn 1 as Dennis Hauger made contact with Callum Hedge. The New Zealander had Myles Rowe up his inside and three into one did not go, sending the Norwegian into the run off and down the escape road. He dropped to the back of the field.
Into turn 7 Caio Collet took P2 from the fast starting Rowe.
Hughes, Collet, Rowe, Hedge, de Alba and Roe was the top 6 after that dramatic opening tour.
Josh Pierson and Jordan Missig had a great exchange for P7 on lap 3, with Pierson eventually coming out on top by repassing his fellow American.
Niels Koolen and Juan Manuel Correa stopped on track on lap 8 as they both came to a halt down at turn 1. It looked like the Dutch driver hit the back of the HMD Motorsports as Correa had a puncture, while the Dutchman had a broken front wing.
By lap 9 Hauger had overtaken 8 cars to move back into P13 before a caution was thrown for the incident mentioned above.
On the restart, de Alba overtook Hedge on the run to turn 1, with Pierson making a decisive move into turn 7 on Roe for P6.
Missig dropped from P8 to P10 as Sceats and Johnson cleared him.
Escotto had a huge lock-up into turn 1 as he headed down the escape road, gifting Miller and Hauger a spot.
Following plenty of close shaves, Hauger eventually cleared Miller on lap 17 into turn 1 to move himself into P11. It was the top 10 a couple of a laps later as he swept around the outside of Jordan Missig into turn 7.
Lochie Hughes had a massive scare as he drifted up and hit the wall on the exit of the last corner but luckily for him he did not sustain damage.
The caution was thrown for a second time with 7 laps to go. James Roe lost his car in the last corner as he got on the grass, hit the barrier and drifted down the track, unfortunately collecting Nikita Johnson in the process. Roe had a broken front wing and other damage, with Johnson having a broken left rear suspension. Both retired.
On the second restart, Rowe and de Alba had a cracking fight for P3. It looked like the Mexican had cleared Rowe but he hung in there on the inside and de Alba went deep. It allowed Callum Hedge to come through as well.
Missig lost out to Miller and Papasavvas as well as they moved into 9th and 10th.
Out front, Lochie Hughes drove superbly to take his first win in the category ahead of Collet and Rowe. Hauger recovered to 8th to maintain his title lead.
