Round 8 of the 2025 F1 season is in the books as the Monaco GP race has been completed, full report and results below.
Heading into the Grand Prix, drivers knew they would be facing at least two trips to pit lane as the mandatory two-stop rule comes into play at Monaco. Multiple grid penalties also shook up ths starting order.
Norris, Leclerc, Piastri, Hadjar, Ocon, Lawson, Albon, Hülkenberg, Bortoleto, Gasly and Bearman started on mediums. Verstappen, Alonso, Hamilton, Sainz, Russell, Antonelli, Colapinto and Stroll started on hards. Tsunoda went for softs.
Norris held the lead into turn 1 despite having a huge lock-up with both front tyres. Verstappen almost went around the outside of Piastri but the Australian stayed ahead. The top 10 stayed as it was.
However, it all kicked off in the battle for 15th. Bortoleto swept around the outside of Antonelli in the hairpin, but the young Italian quickly came back at him and sent it down the inside into turn 7. As the Brazilian seemed caught out by it, he clipped the tyres, damaging his front wing.
Tsunoda, Gasly, Bearman and Bortoleto all boxed at the end of the first lap as a VSC was required to clear debris. All of them went to hards apart from Gasly who went to mediums. The Haas driver had a slow stop as the team looked to have fitted the tyres incorrectly initially.
On lap 9 Pierre Gasly retired from the race as he had a crash into the Nouvelle Chicane as he ran behind Yuki Tsunoda. He clipped the back of the Red Bull and broke his left front suspension. He recovered to the pits to retire. More debris was removed without a Safety Car. Fortunately for the Japanese driver, he could continue.
Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg boxed at the end of lap 12; Franco Colapinto came in a lap later. They switched to hards and mediums respectively.
Racing Bulls played the first set of games as Liam Lawson in 9th backed up the field behind him, allowing Isack Hadjar to come in at the end of lap 14 and come out in 8th.
As the New Zealander continued to back the pack up, Alonso and Ocon took the opportunity to pit and came out behind the Racing Bulls French driver to be P7 and P8.
Bearman pitted for a second time at the end of lap 17, completing his mandatory two stops. Hamilton came in a lap later and pulled off the overcut on Hadjar and Alonso.
Race leader Lando Norris pitted at the end of lap 19, switching to hards. Isack Hadjar came in for a second time a tour later to switch to hards and go to the end.
The other McLaren of Oscar Piastri soon came in himself, but he had a slow 3.8s stop and lost vital time. Leclerc responded two laps later and comfortably stayed between the two McLarens. Max Verstappen took the race lead.
Verstappen (no stop), Norris (1 stop), Leclerc (1), Piastri (1), Hamilton (1), Alonso (1), Ocon (1), Hadjar (2), Lawson (0) and Albon (0) was the top 10 on lap 22.
At the end of lap 26 Colapinto and Bortoleto both made their second mandatory stops as they sat at the back of the field.
Max Verstappen stopped at the end of lap 28, rejoining in 4th ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Esteban Ocon came in a lap later and rejoined in 10th.
Williams joined Racing Bulls in playing games as Carlos Sainz backed up the Mercedes drivers to allow Alex Albon to gap the cars behind. Lawson and the Thai boxed on laps 32 and 33, returning to the track in front of the Spaniard.
On course for a P8 finish, Fernando Alonso’s car packed up halfway through the race when running in P6, although he had to pit again and would have dropped behind Hadjar and Ocon.
At the end of lap 42 Lawson and Albon boxed, remaining in 8th and 9th as they had a big gap to Sainz. Williams swapped the cars as the Thai now played the team game to allow the Spaniard to pull away and create a gap to the cars behind who had already made two stops.
With 30 laps to go, Oscar Piastri made his second stop and switched to hards once again. Leclerc (mediums) and Norris (hards) responded one and two laps later.
George Russell cut the chicane as he got close to Albon and ultimately decided to keep going due to pure frustration. He was given a drive through penalty. Antonelli also had the same moment but gave the place back.
Thanks to the excellent work by Albon and Sainz, the Spanish driver got his two stops out of the way to guarantee a P9 and P10 for the team. After Russell made his first stop, Williams swapped the cars.
Max Verstappen boxed on the penultimate lap to make his second and compulsory stop, giving the lead back to Lando Norris.
Norris came home to beat Leclerc and Piastri as the Brit set the fastest lap on the final tour of the 2025 F1 Monaco GP race. Verstappen, Hamilton, Hadjar, Ocon, Lawson, Albon and Sainz completed the top 10.
